The Death "Service Air Bag" Light Came On Help!

Well after 8 hrs of hard labor i started up my car and i noticed my Service Air Bag light was on. Dunno why or how but it is. Now I have leds wired under my center console but wired to the cigar lighters which have nothing to do with the airbags. Actually have had them like that for almost 6 months. Anyone know what could cause this? Will my airbags deploy in my face while im driving? will i be safe to have it on till i bring my car in for my 18,000 service. Im at 17300 now.

I plan on getting all my warrenty **** fixed as well as my 18,000 mile service so it will prob be there for at least 2 days. Should i get a rental car form the dealership and i wont have to pay for it right since its warrenty work? thanks

Quit trying to figure it out yourself and just bring it to the dealer. The light doesn't mean "Hey driver! Try to figure this one out!", it means "Hey driver, I'm broken, I'm under warrenty, go get me fixed right now!"

My Cobalt had the same problem. I took it into the dealer a.s.a.p. It turned out be the air bag module in the center of the steering wheel. They had to order in a new module for me, took a couple of days. The dealer told me that: THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS>>> THE AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY AT ANY TIME! so, you need to get your car to the dealer A.S.A.P. !

From the service manual it says if there is unusuall voltage under 9 volts or over 16 volts the airbag light will come on. It also said that if the light comes on it takes 7 ignition turn ons to make it go away, thats if nothing is wrong any more. From what i have heard if the airbag light is on the system is dissabled due to the possibility of a malfunction that could do much more damage than if it were not active at all.

If it takes more than a day to repair they can give you a free rental.

Most dealerships will give you a loaner vehicle, (especially for warranty work) but they aren't required to. I have the GM Gold Plan, they have to supply me with a loaner at no charge any time I bring any of my cars in for service. If they don't want to give you a loaner, just tell them you have no other means of transportation, and they should.

This is a common misconception actually...
When the AIRBAG warning lamp is ON, reliable system status and performance simply cannot be assured. The system IS ABSOLUTELY NOT disabled, but is considered to be "unstable" when the lamp is ON. While inadvertent deployment is "unlikely" as long as the Airbag Control Module (aka SDM) has power it will generally still attempt to deploy the airbags should conditions warrant- but the success would depend on the fault that exists. (obviously if you had an open circuit in the drivers airbag circuit it couldnt deploy despite the SDM's attempt to do so)

Whenever the AIRBAG warning lamp is ON the best advice is to get it into the dealer for diagnosis as soon as possible.

HTH
