Oil change gone wrong..

Alright so today I hit 3,500 miles and I decided I wanted to change my oil. I start working on my car, and my cousin comes out and asks if he can help, so I'm like yeah that's cool. I jack the car up, undo the bolt, drain the oil, and take out the oil filter and put the new one in the little plastic top. My cousin asks if he can pour the oil in, and I'm like yeah dude that's fine. Let me also say he doesn't know anything about cars but he wants to learn, so I let him. I had to go inside and do some homework so I tell him, if I leave you here will you put the plug back in, fill the car up with oil and put the filter back in.. after showing him how it's done. He seemed confident so I let him go at it. He comes in and tells me he is done, so I go out there to check, and I pull out the dipstick and I'm like, weird.. it's not even reading. I check again and still nothing. I ask him, yeah by chance.. what hole did you pour that oil in to? He tells me, the hole you the filter out of. I sit there for a second, not freaking out.. then said in a calm voice, yeah man you definitely did it wrong. I then drain the oil out, the new oil that was just poured into the wrong place. Then fill it in the right spot. I don't know why he thought the oil went there, but mistakes happen and I didn't get mad or anything. I just want to know, is this bad at all.. like could it have potentially screwed anything up?

Also, when he put the new filter back in, some of the new oil got on the bottom of the new filter going about quarter of the way up on a small section.

Is that alright, or do I need a new one?

Sounds like he poured the oil into where the filter goes? If so... no, that can't hurt anything...

He put the oil in the filter hole? Err... hmmm. That must have been a tricky pour... Well... drain the engine and do it again... :S

If he poured it into the oil filter housing, it would have made it's way into the crank the same as the through the top and would not hurt anything.

The place where the filter connects and then screws in to.

Yeah, there.

Yes, exactly.. right where the filter goes.

Alright well that is very good to know because I drove it around after and kind of got sketched out that it might have fucked something up. I'm very paranoid about stuff like that.

Yeah, he said it took a long time to pour it in there, and I'm like.. uh it should have definitely just poured in there nice and easy.

if he put the reccomended ammount in there you actually should of just started your car after checking the plug and filter are in correct.

it would have all just dumped in the oil pan and you would have been set.

But like everyone else says you will be fine brosif.

Exactly. You're fine.

Much easier to use the valve cover though

I think I may have lost a little oil though, as it was poured in once, drained, then poured in again.

It should be at the last bar on the dipstick right?.. Or should it be covering the words 'max' on the dipstick?

1) Yeah, 5 quarts.. I've got a 2.2L.

2) Damn, I wish I knew that before I drained it all out. I just thought it was weird I wasn't getting a reading on the dipstick.

Yeah, I know.. but my buddy who works at a Chevrolet dealership said it should be covering the word 'max'.. then my neighbor looks at it and says that it's good.

Just a second opinion man, that's all. I know it's bad to have too much than not enough.

Yeah he used a funnel for sure. I kind of thought he did something wrong when he had this long ass cone funnel sitting out, I'm like why the hell did you use that thing. Why would I be smelling burning oil?

cuz he probably leaked a bit on the engine while putting it in. So you will smell it burning when the engine gets hot for awhile

thats just a normal one but you get the drift

Only problem with that picture is the word 'max' is written past the last bar, where the groves end.

It looks like this..
(The blue like is where my dipstick reads, the black is where it says 'max')

He did use a funnel though, thank god.

well as long as its not past the low and above the max its ok. Add a little more to get it to the line if you think it needs it.

and even with the funnel he might of still leaked a bit. I know i do just a drop or so even if i do it the correct way. even after wiping off it make burn it for a little. no more than 10 minutes tho

Oil should just cover all the bars in the depressed area of the dipstick -- Max means it is full when the oil reaches the upper lip of the depressed area (where the bars are).
