Exclamation HELP!!!!! Engine Smells Like Burning. Not Good.

So the past few days I've been noticing a really scary kinda "metal-ey" sound coming from my engine when I rev up past 3500rpm. The higher I rev, the louder it sounds. And there's also a nice burning smell afterwards. Me and a buddy were looking at it today and I was sitting in neutral in a parking lot and reved it up to about 6000rpm and there was also some smoke (medium grey) that came out of the tailpipe. So I have no idea what it is, but I think it's something to do with the injectors. I have 42lbs on a 2.9" pulley that's boosted as high as 17psi (only 14psi right now 'cause I have a little intake issue) so I think that the injectors simply arent able to keep up with the amount of fuel needed, especially towards top-end. I've noticed a few times while racing or just gunning it, by time I get to 6000rpm, especially 6500rpm (stage 2 7000rpm red line) every now and then it'll start to "buck" a little like it's not getting enough fuel. So I don't know if this is all due to the car starting to knock or something or what. During normal everyday driving it seems fine (shifting around 2500rpm) but anything heavier is the issue. And no, it's not the clutch because it smells totally different. That's all I can think of for now, sorry for the essay.

Sounds bad. What is the smoke out the back like? Oil smoke?

I highly doubt its your injectors, you probably have something much more serious wrong.

I'm not sure 'cause I just caught a glimpse of it in the mirror but it looked like medium-grey smoke, so I dunno...

I would lean towards maybe a cat problem, but just guessing ,could explain the smell.
Or your clutch.

The three of you are all kinda along what I was thinking. I'm thinking maybe a faulty cat 'cause it always sounds like I have a little exhaust leak and I just tightened everything, header-back last weekend. I have the Vibrant setup which I really like and I doubt it'd already be fried. I've only had it on since May-ish. How can I check it?

Car off and preferably cool. Slide under car and hit the convertor with your fist or rubber mallet. If the substrate is broken you will here it.

So basically, crawl under my car and punch it to see if it rattles?

So say it is the d/p. Should I PM Aaron 'cause I bought it from TTR and for a $600+ setup, that's total BS that it blew out that quick with almost no racing whatsoever and just stage 2, 2.9, cai, and exhaust.

Nah, it's actually lower than usual. I'm usually boosting around 16/17 and currently only 14 MAYBE 15 if I'm lucky. And it's colder out now so it's all backwards.

DO you have an Ingalls TD?? I had a metal-grinding sound as well above 5k. All diagnostic test were fine. Put in a motor mount and sold the TD, no more metal-grinding. Just a thought on that. As for the burning smell, do you have a cat? Could be clogged and getting redhot.

Nah, the Ingalls isn't in the car right now. I really think it's the cat 'cause everything feels pretty much fine when I gun it, it just sounds crappy and I think the cat might be burning out. And normal idle-3500rpm accel feels 100% normal.

Most pointless post ever. Doubt it since it runs fine up to 3500rpm and after it feels fine and pulls like normal, just sound like ****.
