how many people think ???

well i hope everyone does lol.

anyways, how many people think that gm is stupid for introducing 2 SS models. i mean come on, the SS should be the top of the line model like it always is. so the ss s/c should just be called SS and and give the 2.4 the toyota cavalier name 2.4Z something like that but definatly dont do the whole 2 SS thing its just idiotic imo. how many people agree.

I agree, the 2.4 non/sc should be called LTZ or SS (and the SS/sc called SSZ). everyone here already has a difficult time keeping them straight, let along the general public.

General Motors is doing something similar to what they did in 2004 with the Monte Carlo line of vehicles.

There were three engine choices and were designated by the three available models LS, SS, SS/SC.

The LS had the 3.4L V6
The SS had the 3.8L V6
The SS/SC had the 3.8L Supercharged V6

This gets confusing when you're looking at an LT Silverado and Suburban which has things like leather and the fancy interior standard. An LT Monte Carlo has cloth and a basic CD player standard.

They have changed it for 2005 and again for the new models in 2006.

for 2005 the Monte's follow this rationale:

LS = 3.4L V6
LT = 3.8L V6
SS = 3.8L SC V6

The 06 will be even more confusing with totally different engines and adding/dropping trim levels. (dropping the supercharger in favor of a v8, to have LS, LT, LTZ and SS)

Chevrolet even gets the SS TrailBlazer (with the LS2 corvette engine) and the SS Malibu.

So it isn't a real big secret that Chevrolet likes the SS badging, but doesn't really know what to do with it.

The idea is that the SS badging will increase the "perceived value" of the vehicle. This can be seen in the fact that the rebates are different for the "Cobalt not SS" and for the "SS Cobalt." Chevrolet believes that people are willing to pay more for an SS.

I'd imagine they could call them Base LS and LT like they do with the Aveo, but that doesn't sound like much fun.

Bottom line, it's nice to have a Cobalt, better to have a Cobalt SS, and only the lucky ones get an SS Supercharged, but they'll have to pay for it.

I guess they didn't want to bother with calling attention to the old Datsun/Nissan Z cars. They wanted to be something different.

yeah but Chevy is known for Z packages, Z24 Cav, Z26 Beretta, Z71 Truck, Z06 Vette....

If you ask me, they wrecked the SS nameplate with the wussy SS Silverado, and the SS Monte Carlos that were nothing more then appearance packages. If your going to throw SS on it, make it live to the name. At least the new SS Impala is supercharged, and the 94-96 SS's had the LT1 V8's in them. The new SS truck should have been done to run with the lightning and SRT10 Trucks. They missed the ball on that one. What makes you think hp more, a SS Corvette or a Z06 Corvette?

A Z06 Cobalt probably wouldn't be a bad idea either.

The Z24/Z26 draws reference to older vehicles. Chevrolet is being very progressive with their models.

Okay, retro-progressive, back to the 40's and 50's, with oranges and blues and yellows. Back to the 60's and 70's with the SS lines. But definitely not back to the 80's and 90's Z24 Cavi's and Beretta's.

Doubt you would see a Z06 version, but Z04 would be sweet. Then you would think performance when you heard the name.

I just thought they had a good thing going, you had the full line of Z cars
Z24 Cav
Z26 Beretta
Z28 Camaro

so you knew Z means top notch.

But I know what your saying, and they are just moving forward (or backwards) to the SS nameplate, with the SS Camaros, trucks, etc. But noticed how they kept the top car a Z?

I agree with you guys, it was kind of a dumb decision to make two Cobalt SS models. Once both are out, you will always have to say "its an SS Supercharged" to avoid confusion between the regular SS model. I don't know what the logic behind this decision is

I think "SS" should be reserved for only high performance versions - not just higher trim levels - all SS vehicles should have best in class performance; for example the Cobalt SS S/C is the best performer out of all the other Cobalt models.

As for the "Z" models - it seems that GM has been slowly killing them off, for what reason I don't know. The only ones that are still around are the truck packages (Z71, Z85, ZR2) and the Corvette Z51/Z06.

It would just make more sense to differentiate the SS models by giving the regular SS a different name, and keep the SS S/C as it is. The regular SS could be called "Z04" as someone mentioned, or possibly something as simple as "LS Sport". Perhaps they will change the designation before it comes out, it would make things a hell of a lot less confusing for everyone.

You guys are forgetting something important.

The "Z" car in reference to a Cavalier, Beretta or Lumina absolutely reeks of crappy vehicles with horrible maintenance requirements. They are trying to differentiate themselves from that.

A Z04 doesn't make any sense when the Z06 is a V8, besides it just sounds cheezy.

ZR2 is no more, it went out with the S-10, another vehicle they are trying to quickly forget.

The Z71 package is soon going to take the place of the LT trim levels. Making everything more confusing.

^^ its the same crap, the z28 and ss camaro's LS1, were the exact same inside and out. just different spings, shocks that was it. nothing else engine was the same. cavaliers them selvs are just a high maintanence vehicle all together, it was built crappy and it remained crappy.

I don't know why, it seemed like a good truck to me. My friend's 2000 Blazer has certainly been a great vehicle.

Is this on the trucks/SUV's only? If so, which models?

Sure, the S-10 platform, which we still make a 2-door Blazer and the ever popular (note the sarcasm) Astro, was a great platform and they were great vehicles.

But GM's policy is to not discount quality vehicles, the S-10 had some of the biggest rebates on the least expensive vehicles for several years. (We're talking 5 grand in rebates on a 14 grand vehicle) That is what they are trying to get away from, hence the new name.

The same goes for the Cobalt SS and SS/SC. They have different rebate structures because GM doesn't believe in discounting their premium lines.

The Z71 in the Tahoes and Suburbans now comes standard with all of the LT things. It used to have the option of cloth, but not any more. I believe the LS, LT, SS, SS/SC lines will stay on the cars, where the Z71 is going to be the premium package on the trucks and full size SUV's. The TrailBlazer and Equinox are just way out in left field as far as their options go.

Don't be talking smack about the S-10.

I got almost 7k off in rebates when I got my 2003 S10 xtreme. 4k cash rebate, 1k buyer loyalty and 2 k off msrp for the GM employee discount. I was going to buy a used S10 until I found out a I could get a brand new one for a few bux more.

Man you are so wrong. S10 Xtreme. I even got the flames on my S10. I had the dealer take them off before delivery but I still have the word heat on the side of the bed. Telling you the S10 Xtreme is the best S10.
