Well i changed the oil in my '09 2.2 the other day. After doing some reading on this site and (thanks to MAVEN) I switched from the regular oil that came from the factory and put MOBIL 1 5W-30 and an AC DELCO oil filter. The reason i did it early was because i found that when driving the car in first gear i couldn't go above 4500 rpm without the sounding like it wanted to kill me. I knew it wasn't the tranny so i did the oil. I tell you what...what a difference. I can drive in every gear above 4500rpm with out a problem. I know its not normal to redline in first gear under normal driving conditions but now i can and not have to worry. I live in Pittsburgh and its getting cold in the mornings and i found it runs better under cold conditions also. I also noticed a difference driving in all other gears too. It just seems like it got a little more...ummm...pep. I know it sounds stupid but its the truth. So to all us 2.2 owners....MOBIL 1 5W-30 and an AC DELCO filter is the way to go. It cost me about $45 for the oil change i got 6 qrts of oil and the filter...(5 for the change and 1 for the trunk). thats not bad. Good luck to all.

thats completely understandable. synthetic does in fact offer the ability to lessen the resistance in your engines rotating assembly.

mine ran smoother with synthetic. Mine felt awesome because my dumbass dealership put in regular gas and crap oil. So when i switched my SS over the premium fuel and synthetic oil it felt like it was a whole new motor in it.

I always use synthetics in my cars, they run much better and its better for the motor anyways

has the engine been broken in yet? i wouldnt rev that high on a new engine, i waited till i hit 5k before i started doin redline shifts...the first 3k i shifter no later than 4k, after that i did a few hard pulls, but ever did it often

well i have about 2400 miles on it now. i would say it is close to being broken in. i have driven it like a grandma since the first time i drove it off the lot. Only a few times here and there have i got on the gas(of course). but MOBIL 1 is the way to go and just wanted to point everyone in the right direction. thanks guys.

I could be wrong, but I'm 99.9% sure my car came with synthetic oil in it to begin with.

the 2.2 does not come with mobil from the factory, just standard oil. only the ss/sc and the ss/tc(i believe) come with synthetic from gm.

Well, my dealership kept insisting that I didn't need to change my oil till 5,000-6,000 miles.

If that was the case, they would change it at 3,000 miles; hence making them more money.

My dealer tells me i don't need to change my oil til the DIC tells me to. However I still change it every 3,000 miles (and yes I use Mobile 1). But I do nothing but stop and go driving with my longest weekly trip being 9 miles on way.

Ive never liked changing oil that way. Yeah its clean, yeah it saves putting the car on ramps/jack/whatever, but you get more oil out when you use the drain plug, Ive tested it numerous times, I love my Evac tank for coolant and for other servicve procedures and things....but NOT for oil changes. Also, the wand doesnt really like super hot oil....itll get deformed eventually. :personal experience:

for the last point...wouldnt the simple fix be to just do an oil change with a cool engine...?

I know if I pull my drain plug after i use it no oil comes out. So I know it gets it at least below the drain bolt. (which is just as good as using it or better)

I've only had my car a little over 3 months now and i'm due for my second oil change (i'm at 11,302km). I use Royal Purple 5w-30 and a regular AC Delco filter.

It costs a little more but I noticed better gas mileage and such in my LS1 Camaro, so I'll keep using it.

* Also, apparently you're supposed to drive you brand new car pretty hard, it helps seat the seals better. They told my dad to drive the snot out of his CTS for the first while instead of baby it, and they told me the same.

theres so many different ways that people tell you break in...

i think this way is a good way...granted its for a nissan but seems like a good write up

I just took mine to the dealership to get that 40 dollar thing done so I got at least 3000 more miles till I get an oil change and by "wanting to kill you" do u mean when u hit about 4k the RPMs start to umm rev at super human pace? cause mine seeems to do that

40 dollar thing?well I guess they must not do this everywhere then GM is doing some promo work its at the dealer service centers (Goodwrench) you get oil, filter, lube, 4 tire rotation, and 27 point inspection for $40 and I also got a $15 coupon so it was only $25 took em 3 and a half hours though:cussing:

Dont mean any real offense but your an idiot and wasting money, unless you run the car really hard, with synthetic you dont need to change it as often.

And I havent switched to synthetic yet in the cobalt, almost done breaking it in, and when I do I will be running pennzoil platinum like I do in my truck motor which is more of a full synthetic than mobil 1.

my car's coming from detroit. well from detroit to pa, then back to ohio. so the first like four hundred miles is gonna be highway, which kinda kills my break in period, but my bu and my bro's hhr are both fine. well till I wrecked the bu.
