Exclamation L61 vs LSJ

Just curious, my buddy has a 05 cobalt LS, what is the diffecne in the engine from the SS? is the whole layout different? or is it just the compresion and the stroke? i been talking to him. im upgrading the turbo on my 300zx, and i am going to have that one left over. what would happen if we put the turbo on his? would we need to lower the compression or what? just curious. let me know. thanks

Chris

LS=2.2L SS/SC=2.0L(Built For Boost) SS/NA=2.4L

So yes they are very different engines...

LSJ has the forged internals to handle more boost, engine oil coooler, piston oil jet squirters--well thats a start anyhow.

so other then a few slight mods to it, his car should be able to handle a turbo with like 6 psi w/out much put into it?

if internals are slight mods ... It really depends on how much boost he wants to run ..

Actually, the LSJ and L61 start out the same. The LSJ is just destroked (allowing higher rpm) and given all of the high strength internals and other parts to handle the boost and provide long term durability.

you seem to have 2 questions. The first is is difference in the engines.

LSJ:
destroked crank for 2.0L displacement
forged crank and rods, dished pistons
piston oil cooling jets
oil cooler
sodium filled exhaust valves
capable of about 300 HP safely without modification
capable of about 400 HP safely with piston swap

L61:
Regular crank for 2.2L displacement
cast crank and rods, flat pistons
Passages for oil jets are cast into the block, but no jets are installed
oil cooler provisions are cast into the block, but not installed
solid valves
capable of about 250 HP safely without modification
capable of about 450 HP safely with rod and piston swap

Your second question had to do with the turbo. You could run about 8 psi on the L61 and stay under that 250HP safe limit. You ofcourse will need some kind of computer to control that thing however.

The heads are not interchangable either. So even though it looks similar, it is very different overall engine!

If the old turbo has a T3 flange you should be able to grab the log maifold off ebay. There is a guy who sells a T3 turbo manifold for the 2.2 ecotec.

There isn't a big choice of off the self turbo manifolds for the ecotec that I have found.

Dude, take my advice and buy the GM Build Book. It will show you everything you need, all the parts, to build the 2.2 up to 250hp, 400hp, 600hp, 1000hp, and 1400hp.
