nope it only comes in manual the hhr ss comes in automatic

 

It would be a disgrace if they put an auto tranny as an option on these cars.

 

I wouldn't take that article to heart. From their own words, it sounds like they can't even drive stick...
"I was not impressed at all with the 5-speed manual transmission (and no automatic is currenty available on the SS). It took a lot of practice and dexterity with the clutch to get reasonably smooth starts in first gear. With so much torque at so little RPM, even with the traction control, I spun the car's front tires (on dry pavement) a couple of times trying to get started uphill from a stop without rolling back into the car behind me."

 

Chevy knows that only cavemen and cavewomen drive SC and TC Cobalts, so no auto for it! Chevy wants to keep the sales low too...if they made it with an auto too many people would buy them. Best to keep the '50s mentality going also...auto slushbox bad...manual good...

i think the sports (formerly the SS n/a) have auto option but not the turbos

 

A disgrace lmao its still an economy car why would it be a disgrace, corvettes come with auto's i don't think that's a disgrace. actually there are alot of performance cars that come with auto's, the cobalt SS isn't a freaking Ferrari.

 

^^As much as I agree with Red07SSNA you do have a point there lol. Just because it wears the SS badge doesn't make it less of an economy car, just a much faster economy car

 

There are just some cars that are meant for the racer enthusiast and tuner enthusiast, and I believe the SS/SC and SS/TC fit in that category. Just like the Acura RSX, just the base model comes in 5spd and auto, but the RSX-S tuner version comes in only a 6spd, same with the Civic Si's. The Corvette is a legend in its own right, and not everybody who gets one wants to be a weekend racer and mod the car, so they put the auto in it to accompany anyone from 18 years old up to 100 years old. And I see more older guys driving Corvettes than I do younger guys, and most of them arent racers at all, just figured it was their time to pay the money for the Vette, and didnt wanna have to worry about a clutch and shifting gears.

 

I only say this because if you look at everything else in it's class, it would be the only auto. Plus I would list it as a performance car with economical benefits when drivin normally . Corvettes come with auto because its mostly the older crowd buying them, so it makes sense. If your gunna build a turbo cobalt, might as well back it up with speed. I dont see autos living up to the name is all im saying. Just like auto camaros are kind of pointless in my mind, since they really hold that car back.

 

I like how the guy doing the review was trying to compare the interior to an Audi and the ride quality to a BMW. It made me lol.

 

An auto in the t/c would be a fast car. Id bet with a nice stall converter and drag radials it would outrun most stick ss t/c's in the 1/4. From a roll, no.

 

A GOOD auto would be a nice option. If it's a 4 speed, then don't bother-it's just not worth it.

 

and it would also sell 5x as many. They have auto vetts but an auto fwd cobalt is blasphamy.

 

Automatics in performance-oriented cars

 

AUTO's = $$$ for GM sorry but the majority of the public don't drive manuals nor do they want to. Granted in performance oriented cars that stat goes way up but i'm sure more would drive if they were offered in an AUTO.

 

I wish my TC had an automatic sometimes. I after 3000 miles of driving it I am still yet to prefect the shift points on it.
I have read the new Camaro SS automatic is suposed to be faster in the 1/4 mile than the manual.
Many exotic cars have paddle shift transmissions, I would consider them an automatics.

The first American sports car, Corvette was available with a manual till 1955. However it wasn't considered a sports car yet. The grand national, Syclone, Typhoonm and TB SS only came in automatics.

But when is comes down to it I don't understand why you can get an HHR SS in an auto and not the Cobalt SS.

 

A good auto would be awsome. With a stall converter you can load the engine off the line. And you can also stay in boost during shifts. I do know about no lift shifts, I am not completely convinced.

The solstice gxp auto is actualy a little faster than the manual.

I would not want an auto, BUT an auto in a turbo car can be a very good thing for performance. The MKIV Supra auto was designed with the boost in mind and it was faster than the manual.

If the SS turbo was available with an auto I'd already own one...and as long as I owned it I probably would never take it down a dragstrip, so I don't care if it was .89776234587684576 seconds slower than a stick.

 

my main curiousity is as bri2203 mentioned....they offerd the turbo hhr ss in auto...y not in the cobalt?...and i see to an extent what some of u guys mean when u think an auto in a performance oriented car is a no go...but what does it hurt to have an auto option...i would think more people would want one...which would mean more $$$ for GM...me personally i love driving stick...but i just learned how and id probably get tired of it a few yrs down the road leaving me with atleast a few yrs on the loan to pay lol, and i get real nervous on hills and freeze up:= stall.. lol but i guess practice makes perfect

 

It would be interesting to get the rationale from GM as to why they chose not to provide the auto in the Cobalt SC/TC models. Considering that other GM models with TC/SC come/came with autos it doesn't make sense. It would also be interesting to see the ratio of Cobalts made with auto Vs Cobalts made with manual...I doubt the Cobalt sales would be anywhere near the 200,000 annual mark if they only came with manual trannies.

Trust me...there will come a time when you get tired of shifting. If every day was open roads and no traffic, where you could wind out the gears, that would be one thing, but day-to-day driving in traffic is the real "thing".

 

yea, thats my delima, take the chance buy it and hope im not tired of the stick in a few yrs or not get a turbo at all and kick myself in the ass later for not lol

 

More importantly you're going to be the one driving the car day after day! Other's personal choices and opinions shouldn't be used to make your selection (including mine ).
