So for the last few weeks my brakes squeak when I come to a stop. Yesterday I was braking and the squeak was MUCH louder. So I'm thinking it's time to replace pads. I haven't taken a tire off to inspect yet though.

This being my first car, however, what should I replace with? If it's not the pads, what could it be? Do I need to bleed the brakes to do so? I'm sure there's a how to on here on how to do it but I haven't checked that out yet. Just kinda seeing what could be the problem first before I jump to conclusions. Thanks! :)

Brake squeaking is caused by either hard contact, as in a worn out pad contacting the rotor, or debris caught in the pad/caliper. It can also be caused by dust/dirt build in the pads, and poorly lubricated caliper and pad slides.

Hawk Ceramic are a nice everyday upgrade if you arent that interested in all out performance, just safe, quiet quality brake pads.

you need to put some motor oil on the rotors.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think it's dirt (but I hope it is!). I'm just gonna throw a wild one out there, but I'm gonna go ahead and guess that motor oil would make it worse. It lubricates, and we want friction.
