Question Tranny might be dying but hopefully its just the TC...

Well, after 2 years of being turbocharged on my automatic transmission, the tranny has started wanting to not shift sometimes, then other times its fine. Today though, it just kept revving in the 1st gear and accelerating very slowly. From idle, it would buck like im having wheel hop type of feeling then it would stop. It didnt feel like it was changing gears at all but I guess it must have been because I was at speeds from 0mph up to 100mph. Does this sound like the start of a failing torque convertor?

This is basic, but have you checked your trans fluid level? Too little and the line pressures will be too low and can cause those sorts of issues.. Hopefully thats all it is.

Give it a fluid and filter change and see what happens. It will also give you a chance to check the fluid coming out for anything that shouldnt be there.

Okay, is there a how to on changing tranny fluid and filter. I have zero experience with this. I just changed my oil for the 1st time last week and that was easy. Is changing the trans fluid as easy? I'm not sure how to check the level, the only dipstick Ive seen is for the oil.

yeah its pretty easy, unbolt trans fluid pan, let the fluid drain, remove filter, and do the same in reverse but get a new pan gasket.

be sure to clean the pan out before re-install with a rag, wipe off the magnet too. also (common sense) clean the edge were it seals before re-install.

PM sharkey about it. He can tell you exactly where the level hole is in the tranny and how to get to it. It doesn't have a dipstick. Basically, with the engine on, you pour tranny fluid into a hole on the top of the transmission with a plug removed from the side of the transmission. As soon as the tranny fluid becomes full enough to start coming out of that hole (i think its called a check hole or level hole?), then you dont need to add anymore.

What is the chances I really need a new filter? I wanna try to top it off and see how that goes I guess. I looked at some diagrams on the tranny and I see what you are all talking about. Next chance I get i gotta do this. Today though it shifted fine. Its off and on with this issue.

do tranny temps have any bearing on shiftability?

also, i would still PM skarkey about the tranny oil thing. Theres more to it than just putting the oil in and going. You gotta work it through each gear.

BTW, he works on transmissions professionally. He might be able to better diagnose your issue

Sounds like a failing trans to be honest...

I just killed the built trans in the GTO, lost 2nd gear... it revs almost freely as you describe, shakes and bucks at various times, we dropped the pan and found tons of metallic sludge on the magnet and in the fluid.

Here are some pics of what you DON'T want to see Doug:

Trans fluid is supp to be Clear Cherry Red btw.. lol

It usually is not a weak point until you start doing more then boltons... The trans in my pics is a 9 month old "Built" unit that I just bought a month ago from a friend in Jersey.... needless to say I was not happy and we are working on a resolution to the issue, but I have no 2nd gear now and most of first is not there either
