Question What octane should I use?

I just bought a brand new 2006 Chevy Cobalt LT 2.2 Ecotech, and I've been told many different things of what octane I should use in my Cobalt. The guy at the dealership said use nothing buut 87 because it would be a waste of money to put anything higher cause the car is designed to run at 87 and will run the same with anything higher.

A couple other people told me that 87 is pretty much for lawn mowers and such, and that I should use at least 89. I'm not sure if this is exactly true, so I'd like to see if you guys could give me a little insight of what I should use in my car.

Thanks.

Run 87. That's what the 2.2 is designed to run on, and running anything higher won't give you any huge benefits- not enough to justify the extra cost of the fuel. I've never used anything but 87 in my 2.2 and it runs just fine.

Ok, i just wanted to make sure. That's a good thing too, because i can't afford to be paying any more for gas than i have to. I just figured i'd ask because i know some cars aren't meant to run on 87.

mid grade 89, ultimately its up to you, everyone and their dog will run cheapest gas they can, it's up to you if you want to go from A to B or prolong the life of your car.

Yeah, but will it really prolong the life of my car if I use 87?

87 won't prolong the life of ur car, what I was saying is that 89 while costing a lil more is better fuel, better fuel car runs smooth, better. This on a long term could prolong the life of ur car.

Read the owners manual, thats what it is there for, and use what ever grade it says the car was designed for. Running anything different may make it not run properly. Higher grade gas my seem like a good idea until many miles down the road you find you burned something out. I just figure that GM knoews what the car should be run on and who am I to argue.

cough93cough..J/k, that's probably a bit to expensive for such little gains in the 2.2...I'd say nothing less than mid-grade though

If your car is designed for a certain kind of gas putting in higher grade will do NOTHING. I read a great article about it recently.

The SS/SC needs 89 right?
