What is this car part?

What is this car part? Can be seen easily by laying on the ground at the back of the car. This is not a pic of my car, but I do have the part circled in red on my stock car. What is this part and what does it do?

I don't think so, I think that the fuel pump is mounted inside the fuel tank. I'm not sure though.

BOOYA! lol, now as to its function.....im kinda lost on that one off the top of my head, although a wikipedia search would clear it up lol

EDIT: Boys and girls, here is what that little black box does:

An evaporative canister is part of the evaporative system that is within the emission system. Hydrocarbons are a form of pollution that gasoline releases as it evaporates or after is is burned. While fuel is stored inside the tank, fumes build up and are retained inside this canister. The canister contains charcoal that absorbs the hydrocarbons. When the engine is started, a valve opens that allows fresh air to come in and purge the fumes (hydrocarbons) into the air intake and then into the combustion chamber for burning. I understand that more hydrocarbons are released into the atmosphere by leaving your fuel cap off, than what comes out of your tailpipe while the engine runs. If there is a leak anywhere in the evaporative system, such as a bad hose, canister leak or leaving the fuel cap loose, the check engine light will set.

so pretty much, that thing is something that is supposed to make hte exhaust more "green"

but my question is why would they put something flammable near a sorching hot exhaust pipe? or is hte gasses inside that chamber not burnable?

I wonder how much that thing weighs and if anyone has removed theirs? It must save a lot of pollution though if they put that whole system in there. Do most new cars have these evaporative canisters? I had a 95 Grand AM and 99 Bonneville and I don't think they had these canisters.
