Four pipes from the engine merging into one at the same point compared to four pipes from the engine merging to two pipes merging to one pipe.

The 4-1 has a better top end, but looses a bit off the bottom end.
The 4-2-1 doesnt have quite the HP top end but holds a better mid range power.

but the only header out is pacesetter 4-1

header

TIPICAL 4-1 HEADER

YOU CAN SEE THAT EACH TUBE FROM EACH CYLANDER MERGE DOWN AT THE COLLECTOR WHICH ATTACHS TO THE REST OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM

TIPICAL 4-2-1 HEADER

YOU CAN SEE THAT EACH CYLANDER TUBE MERGES WITH ONE OTHER MAKING IT A DUAL TUBE SYSTEM, THEN THE 2 TUBES THEN MERGE INTO ONE JUST BEFORE THE COLLECTOR
