Rissa 07-22-2009, 11:02 PM Or anyone who is able to, anyway you could pm or post any and every recall or tsb for the ss/tc? My car is definitely having issues now, and I'm pretty sure it's not tune related. It's just not holding boost, and last night it went up to 22, and just fell down to 10. And driving it today and last night, it just wasn't making the power it normally does. After this weekend I'm probably going to take it in to get looked at, and it would be helpful if I at least knew some common problems, searching has brought me nothing. Help a girl out! Thanks. :)

BLAZIN07SS 07-22-2009, 11:06 PM boost leak?
madmark 07-22-2009, 11:07 PM thats good that you want to learn about your car but if its warranty does it really matter as long as its fixed?
Permafried- 07-22-2009, 11:07 PM Not a GM employee but your problem sounds like it MIGHT be one of the following:
Charge piping has come loose from the throttle body. Follow the piping up from the passenger side of the intercooler and try to pull up as hard as you can up to see if it's sealed tight around the TB. It's a pain in the ass to get to but you can't miss where it hooks up.
On the passenger and driver side check your charge piping to make sure it's NOT rubbing on the huge bolts popping up from the lower frame. If you look down on the driver's side you can't miss it...passenger side more difficult. Mine only has about 1.5 inches of clearance on the driver's so if your charge piping has sagged it might have punctured through.
Beyond that if you're losing that much boost with no CEL the only other thing I could think of is the charge piping seal around the turbo itself.
Rissa 07-22-2009, 11:11 PM Yes I would like to know what's wrong with my car lol. Doesn't seem like your typical boost leak, everything is super tight. It also is an intermittent problem, it doesn't happen ALL of the time, but it seems to be getting more frequent.

No recalls I know of that could cause that, three issues Ive seen and at least one of them has a information notice about is: charge piping rubbing on the radiator support bolts(Steddys car did this, and was even worse with Hahn piping), nipple breaking off charge piping near TMAP, and only other boost realted thing ive seen is a broken wastgate valve. The nipple breaks off the valve and has to be replaced.
I would prepare to lose your tune if I were you though....updating the ECM calibration is common practice at some dealers for drivability issues, and its recommended for several codes.

Rissa 07-22-2009, 11:46 PM Didn't have the Terminator tune on long enough to know, stock it did a few times, I'm going to put that ECU in tomorrow and see how it is. I really don't think it's the tune though.
HB_SS/TC 07-23-2009, 12:34 AM Would a clogged cat increase or decrease boost?

stock dp?
Rissa 07-23-2009, 02:14 AM Stock dp, it doesn't spike, it goes up to 22 and holds.
drew1991sf 07-23-2009, 02:16 AM o then its a boost leak for sure. didnt u change ur intake lately? u check all ur t-bolt clamps? all of them dont b lazy
Rissa 07-23-2009, 02:18 AM No the new intake is not on yet, I haven't checked quite everything yet to make sure it's tight. There's a recall that my car fits into, and a couple TSB's that could have the cause.
HB_SS/TC 07-23-2009, 02:21 AM I can probably check the piping this Saturday

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
If a technician encounters a low boost/power condition and/or dtc, the following may help.
Recommendation/Instructions:
When a technician encounters a low boost/power condition and/or related dtc on a 2008-09 Cobalt SS they should inspect the right side CAC-(Charge Air Cooler) pipe for contacting a radiator support bolt. Due to the location of the CAC on 2008-09 Chevrolet Cobalts a radiator support bracket bolt on the right front may make contact with the lower charge air cooler/hose from below. This contact may cause the CAC to leak boost or vacuum if a hole is present. Review the illustration to see the location of the suspect bolt. A thick washer may be added to the bolt to increase clearance.
Note: Bulletin 07-06-04-029 should be used to diagnose the charge air system when leaks are suspected. This bulletin may be aided by using the evap smoke cart to introduce smoke to the CAC system.

(1) Right lower radiator support bracket
(2) Right front lower Charge Air Duct concern
(3) This bolt will wear a hole in the Charge Air duct
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
A technician may encounter a vehicle with a low boost/power condition and/or DTC P0299 and or P0101 setting. This may be the result of a cracked or broken fitting at the turbocharger assembly.
Recommendation/Instructions:
It has been determined that the nipple for the turbocharger wastegate actuator may be damaged causing this condition. If this concern is noted please inspect the area on the underside of the turbo compressor housing for the wastegate actuator solenoid valve. The nipple (see CALLOUT #1) may have been damaged causing a loss of boost pressure. It may be necessary to remove the charge air duct for a closer inspection. See eSI "Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Replacement" for solenoid replacement procedure.
http://cobaltss.net/gallery/files/9/7/1/3/2206390.jpg
This solenoid is available separate from the turbocharger and should be replaced as a sub assembly. Do not replace the turbocharger assembly.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Condition
Some customers may comment that the SES light is on. Upon inspection, you may find DTC P0299 (Turbocharger Engine Underboost) or P0234 (Turbocharger Engine Overboost) set.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a mis-adjusted wastegate.
Correction
Note: The wastegate adjustment is sometimes a very fine process. When adjusting the wastegate, only small adjustments should be made. Loosen one nut at a time and only adjust the nut one turn at a time; then tighten the other nut against the shaft and test drive to verify. This may have to be performed several times to achieve the desired boost level. To ensure proper adjustment, the vehicle should be at full operating temperature when testing. The vehicle will be very hot and may need to cool between adjustments. Too large of an adjustment can cause repeat DTCs.
Adjust the turbocharger wastegate. Refer to Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Adjustment in SI.
Troubleshooting Tips for DTC P0299 - Turbocharger Engine Underboost
To increase boost, adjust the nuts (in) towards the actuator; in essence making the shaft shorter.
Troubleshooting Tips for DTC P0234 - Turbocharger Engine Overboost
To reduce boost, adjust the nuts (out) towards the end of the shaft; in essence making the shaft longer.

Rissa 07-23-2009, 11:16 AM Thank you!! <3
aterminatorz 07-23-2009, 11:52 AM Are you saying that when you are WOT that you are not holding boost? If you are only 50% throttle for example, you are not going to hold constant boost pressure as RPM increases.
Rissa 07-23-2009, 12:00 PM Yes WOT it won't hold it SOMETIMES. It's very strange.
383_Stroker 07-23-2009, 12:18 PM put your stock ecm in and run it to see if it still does it. Then you're know whether its tune related or not..
Rissa 07-23-2009, 12:21 PM Yup doing that again today.
HB_SS/TC 07-23-2009, 12:25 PM Hmmm and traction control is off?
Rissa 07-23-2009, 12:26 PM I don't mess with traction control lol.
HB_SS/TC 07-23-2009, 12:31 PM Try next time with traction control off and see what happens.
Rissa 07-23-2009, 12:36 PM But I've never messed with it before, and it used to be fine.
HB_SS/TC 07-23-2009, 12:38 PM That's true
Rissa 07-23-2009, 12:39 PM hmmmmmmmmmmmmm well I'm gonna drive around with it with the stock ecu you up until the meet on Saturday and see how it does then.
rukkee 07-23-2009, 01:36 PM I wasn't going to post this one cause it's kind of confusing ......But if since this is intermittent ...you might want to take a look.

Subject: Intermittent DTC P2261 Setting
Models: 2008-2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS
2008-2009 Chevrolet HHR SS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
A technician may find DTC P2261: Turbocharger Bypass Valve Stuck Closed set with no problem found. It may be intermittent in nature or they may find the dtc will set after a hard acceleration, usually in third gear. DTC P2261 is a type B dtc and will not set on the first drive cycle the dtc sets, therefore multiple test drives should be performed to confirm repair.
Recommendation/Instructions:
SI diagnostics for this DTC states that the ECM compares the measured MAF reading to the modeled MAF and has detected a series of pulsations in the induction system that exceed a calibrated threshold. A snapshot of "Induction Data" will show the fault, however the tech may need to compare the snapshot data to another vehicle if they are unfamiliar with the readings. They should note a fluctuation and or a difference in the desired versus requested boost level. When diagnosing this dtc pay close attention to Circuit/System testing step #1. This step has you inspecting for any vacuum leaks, damage, restrictions, improper routing or connecting of the vacuum hoses on the charge air bypass valve solenoid, the charge air bypass valve, and the charge air bypass valve vacuum tank.
We have found leaking vauum tanks causing this dtc. When testing the vacuum tank, care must be used or the results may not be valid. The vacuum tank has an integral check valve not noted in SI. To check the Vacuum Tank operation, disconnect the hose that runs from the tank to the Bypass Valve Solenoid at the solenoid and apply vacuum to the tank. The tank should be able to maintain vacuum with no decay. Note: If you remove the vacuum hose from the intake manifold and plug it and the decay stops the check valve is leaking, if the decay continues the tank itself is leaking.
Note: Front wheel drive platforms using the 2.0 Liter RPO (LNF) incorporate a charge air bypass valve supplemental vacuum tank. The purpose of the tank is to provide an instant source of vacuum to the bypass valve via the bypass solenoid (when it is commanded open by the ECM). This results in less pressure buildup under closed throttle conditions, thereby reducing compressor noise, surge and spool time.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Rissa 07-23-2009, 01:46 PM yes I saw that one, and was considering it also, but my car has never shown a CEL so could that still be the problem?
Permafried- 07-23-2009, 01:50 PM Someone please sticky the TSBs that have been posted here, poor guys have to keep posting the same stuff over and over again because they get buried and these ones (with images) could be incredibly helpful to others :). On a side note, what in the hell were they thinking when they put that screw where they did
rukkee 07-23-2009, 02:07 PM It Should set a code , actually all of the tsb's and PI's i posted "should" , but there are always exceptions.

It would be nice .....I actually took the time to copy all those pics and change them to jpeg's (for the roll pin PI below ) so i could post them. About the screw ....lol.....nothing like putting a sharp pointy thing near a charge pipe lol...... that and the wastegate rod adjuster ....what a pain in the ass ... I was going to adjust the wastegate on my car but it wasn't worth the time to get to it.
Rissa 07-23-2009, 02:13 PM yeah no codes, but it's definitely acting up, I hope it's one of these problems!! lol
