View Full Version : can I install this?
07Maliboo 07-27-2009, 11:37 PM I've got an lsj header and dp, I'm going to see if my dealer will flash out sai, but can I through on that header and dp with my stock cat back no problem? will it bolt up just right? I'm asking because I don't wanna get it all on and then realize it's not gonna work. it's n 09. I'm eventually gonna get an aftermarket cat back but I just wanna know for now if the lsj header and dp will bolt right up to the stock cat back?
Gene Culley 07-28-2009, 09:33 PM If you have SAI on the 09 LAP it is going to take more work. See my SC install thread for details. If you're not good with a grinder, dremel or rotozip, forget it.
07Maliboo 07-29-2009, 01:28 AM I'm actually pretty good with power tools. ha ha. Love em' . yeah I've got sai, I jsut odn't know how to get the sai out. I tried readin your thread and I got kinda lost in all the stuff there. ha ha. I couldn't find where you had it removed.

....?
im confused. whats different with the SAI in a LAP vs the SAI in a L61?
07Maliboo 07-29-2009, 10:38 AM the l61 doesn't have sai (secondary air injection). it's for emissions and it's some bull.

The L61 did have SAI in a few years.
Needs to be flashed out by dealer or turned off with a tune.

Yes it should bolt up.. Double check your current down pipe and make sure you have enough O2 sensors in the LSJ DP. some of the 2.2's had an extra o2 sensor. Your regular dealer, more than likely, will not do it. You are in Ohio... talk to tom at Crate Engine Depot. They were the first to confirm it was possible.

I have an L61 and I had SAI

message me, I'll walk you through it. Should also be in my 2.2 reflash thread. It's not difficult, just a pain in the ass.
07Maliboo 07-29-2009, 12:34 PM oh, well shows how much I didn't know. what years did the l61 have sai? was it on cobalts with the l61?

06-08 I believe.
It was very random which cars got it.

its on all 2.2 cobalts (excluding '05) that have a NY, CA, or...w/e the 3rd state's emissions package is. The car doesnt necessarily need to be sold in those states, as there are cars in chicago equipped with the CA emissions package, etc.
I used to have it as well..

Late 06 and all 07 and 08's. There were a few freaks that didn't have it but it became standard

The SAI is part of the cylinder head in the rear in the LAP. It is not the case in the L61 as it is on the header. I ran into this in my thread... I'll copy and paste the info....
Friend came over so we got to it. Started stripping things off the engine like the coils, fuel rail, etc. Started removing all of the SAI components. Removed the SAI tubing and switching from the back. Removed the exhaust manifold and down pipe. When we got the exhaust manifold and down pipe off we got a little surprise.
There is a tube connected to the back of my cylinder head that has open ports and the cylinder head has ports for this thing in the back!! This is not on any other year SAI vehicle except for my 2009!! Here is a picture of that tube in a diagram. I was going to take a photo but my friend put it back on before I could get to.

It looks like this when the manifold is bolted up...the holes in the gaskets show you where this tube goes on the back of the head.

I quickly realized that I may have to use the stock exhaust and leave the SAI tubing and switch in the back and wouldn't be able to use the LSJ exhaust manifold or down pipe. After sitting for a few minutes and thinking about it... I decided that I could probably modify the LSJ exhaust manifold to accept this tube.
This picture shows where those holes in the gasket to accept the tube should be on my LSJ exhaust maninfold.

So I took my red paint pen and outlined it on the LSJ exhaust manifold.

Here is the finished LSJ exhaust manifold ready to accept the SAI tube bolted to the back of the cyl head. Should have taken a different picture because it is showing black where I cut it out. It took me 1 1/2 hours of using my grinder, dremel with a diamond bit, etc, to get this to work.

The LSJ exhaust manifold and down pipe are now installed. My rear 02 sensor wouldn't come out of my pipe, so I have to buy a new one tomorrow. I also had to modify the LSJ exhaust manifold heat shield because it wouldn't fit because of that tube behind the cyl head.
07Maliboo 07-29-2009, 10:06 PM So it looks like the lsj header has a little groove that u can cut along to match the stock one. So I have to still have a tube in there?

no..you dont. Gene's post is for LAP engines...you have a L61, and can just swap headers, and run with a CEL, or get a tune to delete the CEL. No harm comes with either option
07Maliboo 07-30-2009, 11:00 AM ha ha. you missed my sig I take it? ha ha. :) I've got the 09 1lt. and im talking about the little pieces that look like they're not as thick as the reast of the header where he cut. if you look at the jsl header in his pics, the grooves he cut out to match the stock are like not as thick, you can kinda see what I'm talkin about if you look at the center hole on either header and look how it's not as thick. if that makes any sense to anyone.
HunterKiller89 07-30-2009, 05:07 PM haha, yea, i saw '07 malibu and only registered the '07 part
07Maliboo 07-30-2009, 05:53 PM ha ha, I don't even have a bu anymore. I got an 09 balt!!! and I love it:)
Gene Culley 07-31-2009, 10:22 PM Yes, the casting is not as thick and can be cut.
I could probably write a few long paragraphs on how to handle it... but here are a couple of quick choices.
#1. Where the 2 ports are in the back of the cylinder head you could take the 2 ports in the tube (corresponding mating parts) to create a template for block off plates.
#2. If you install the tube you are left with 1 port at the end of the tube to hook up to the switch (big thing that sticks up in the back) and do a block off plate there. That is what I did.
#3. You can have the holes in the tubes welded shut.
#4. You can get an LAP non-emissions cylinder head.
To me, and why I did it, #2 seems to be easiest.
jbenso4 08-27-2009, 07:28 PM My 2007 L61 has SAI on it and i got it tuned out by vince at trifecta, then i put a pacesetter header on it
jonxxxedge1 08-27-2009, 07:35 PM is your car an auto?
if it is i heard the lsj dp is too short
