FEELER: Modified shift linkage.

So, our linkages are weak, most of us know this. No lift shift is even harder on the linkages. I was wondering what the interest would be if I could get a stronger linkage made.

Also, looking for ideas. Do we need both linkages, or only the one that controls forward and reverse motion of the shifter? For those of us that have had the shifter out, we see how weak the stock piece is, but one consolation to this is it is very easy to adjust. My ideas would end up taking a couple wrenches to adjust, but would be much stronger. They would be manufactured from aluminum for some parts, such as the rods, and cast steel for other parts, unless I can source aluminum parts. Also, one minor drawback in the installation phase, for the sake of strength is that we would have to drill the stock pivot joint from the shifter, and replace it with a different piece, unless I can find a strong piece that will fit the stock one.

Now, since I am not a vendor, you will have to PM me for pricing, but I assure you it will be worth it. Feel free to PM me, and I will discuss anything with you. The more people we get to do this, the less it will cost you all. I would like to see at least 10 people for the best pricing, but I will start building with 5 people on the list. I will say that if we get ten people, everyone could save up to $10.

I will be popping my shifter out this week to take a look, and make sure I have thought everything through. So far, I think I have everything thought out, and have the right ideas. The pricing will be subject to change, if i have to change parts for any reason, but I don't plan on it.

So, let's start a list!

1) mkriebs
2) Nato9
3) Leveecius (lnf)
4) ssturbd08

if you're talking about the plastic, right link that connects the shifter to the actual cable, then yes, i am very interested. i already broke that one throwing it into 3rd.

It would be the entire linkage. I am not sure how far back it would have to go, or where I could connect what I am making to the stock linkage that goes to the trans, but yes, it would replace that crappy plastic piece plus some. I will PM you with my pricing ideas.

I'm not sure how the SC linkage is, but MAN is the TC linkage a POS. I would be intrigued to see the SC linkage. All I know is we have horribly crappy plastic pieces that like to break, especially when we run a STS.

Yeah, look it up for me. The only problem I have had with mine thus far is the way the linkage clips together, slipped apart one time when I was shifting quick to get out in front of some traffic. It slipped up, and the only gear I could get into was 5th. It about got me rear ended, and I HAD to have glazed my clutch taking off from a stop sign in 5th to get off the main road to somewhere I could readjust it.

Alright! Updated list looks like this:

1) mkriebs
2) Nato9
3) Leveecius (lnf)
4) ssturbd08

I am glad there is some interest in this. Just so you guys know, the reason there is not pricing in the thread is because I am not a vendor, I am just trying to help the community out. So, I will PM all interested parties with the final pricing soon, and I believe I have contacted everyone on the list with the tentative pricing so far...

Well, I got #5 today guys! If i don't get 10 interested by the end of the month, I will ship them out at the higher price. Anyone else interested, PLEASE PM me for pricing and more info. I will try to get back to you soon.

Like I told someone else, I will be starting school soon, so these may, or may not be ready to ship by the end of the month. It all depends on how much spare time i have, but I will not require any money until they are built and ready to ship out.

Here is the updated list:
1) mkriebs
2) Nato9 (css)
3) Leveecius (lnf)
4) ssturbd08 (css)
5) gregtharas (lnf)

Hmmm, so I just broke mine in the attempt to look at it further and measure it. I honestly don't think I will be able to do it now. I had thought that the shifter had much more rod in the linkage than it did, and I had thought that the rod would be replaceable. Instead, there is about 3" of rod, where I had thought about 6", and it goes straight into the cable instead of being replaceable.

I will continue to do research on a fix, but its not looking promising now. And does anyone have the part number for those cheap plastic pieces I was going to fix? Lol...

OK all!!!! I have finally thought of the final solution. Since my previous idea got crushed, I was brainstorming at work today, and I have settled on the idea of a billet replacement. I have the idea in my head, and depending on the space requirements, and the availability of the machine shop next door, that will be a go.

Definitely have alot of research and measuring to do still, but I SHOULD (hopefully) be able to get the machine shop to make me a one off for a demo for you all. The only thing is, it will use the plastic threaded piece from the old piece. As far as I know, no one has broken one of those yet.

The reason that short throw shifters break the adjuster ends is because the shifters arent designed for the LNF shift tower. If you want to use a STS on an LNF you really need to hack apart the base of the shifter for clearance.

You thinking about making cable ends like these that Diesel Geek has been doing for a long time?:

PM me with what youre up to

Yeah see the plastic part of the shift linkage that holds the little ball at the bottom of the shifter( dont flame me i'm a noob and dont know all of the terms) shattered on mine. I could pop it back in and put a zip tie to get me to the dealership, but and hard shift would pop it back out
