oil in gas
oil in gas
so i having a problem with my engine, my car was low on gas and wount start then i added some gas and it started idling really really rough like shakin the car plus a cel and accelerated sluggish, so i filled up the tank w/ a total of 8gal and fuel injector cleaner and it idled alil less rough, the exhaust is alot louder, so i sucked some gas out of the tank and found out theres some oil was in the gas but a real small amount bases on the gas i took out to check make-up, i just left it at my parents house for the weekend in chicago while i'm in iowa but hav to go bac home to KY on sunday, it drives ok but idles real rough, wat should or can i do to fix it?
first clean up the oil from the fuel system...once u get the oil out of your tank, remove your fuel injector from the fuel rail, turn the key to the on position, this will spray fuel, continue to do so until there is no oil coming out of the fuel rail...this will clean up the fuel system from the oil, once u know all the oil is out, pur 1/3 of a bottle of seafoam in thru the intake and the rest in the gas tank, follow direction on the seafoam bottle, this will help clean out everything in the intak system aswell as help remove gunk from the engine...once its all cleaned up, u will know if your engine is still good to go...if it continues to idle funny or drive funny for the next mile or 2, than something is wrong, and its time for a compression test
I wonder if the when the gas tank was almost empty, if some condensation occurred making just a little water in the tank. Then you added some gas which diluted the moisture enough for a start.
The fuel injector cleaner has a lot of methyl hydrate in it which removes moisture from the tank and lines.
Here in northern climes, methyl hydrate is commonly sold as gas line antifreeze.
The part I'm confused on is how the oil got in your tank? Did the gas you added (8 gals) come from a gas can that had premix or something in it?
If you are sure it's oil in your tank, I'll defer to the others on their advice on how to clean the system.

Lets assume you poured premix two stroke fuel into your car....lets say it was 2 gallons, lets say youve got a really old weedwacker and it runs on crazy old skool 24:1 fuel mix......youd would have putt a whopping 10.5 ounces, or 0.08 gallons of oil into the tank. This isnt gonna cause an issue especially if you put another 6 gallons of gas in the tank(you said you had 8 gallons total)
Fill the car with fuel, replace the plugs if they are oily, and remember to never put 2stroke fuel in your car again.
PS: how did you know there was oil in the fuel? Oil dissolves in gas, my guess is it was colored (blue, green, etc) oil? If not (if it was black like oil)you may not have oil you may have biological sludge from contaminated gasoline with ethanol content. THAT will need to be cleaned out, because if you poured in enough that you can see it, its gonna killl your fuel pump. Youll need to have the tank dropped to clean it.

i think it was maybe a gal or so of 40:1 premix gal from a snowblower was in the gas can i used then i put 89 octane gas from BP, so when i get bac 2moro i put seafoam through my system and check/ change out my plugs and see if that helps
That tiny amount of oil probably isn't going to do anything harmful BUT since you now KNOW there was 40:1 premix in it, I would siphon the tank til it's empty (you know that gas is contaminated with oil now).
Take the gas you siphoned and use it for the snow blower. Next go kick the snow blower and then kick your own ass for adding premix to your car.
Let me say it again...don't use the gas you have in your tank in your car....it is contaminated with oil.
Once the tank is siphoned empty, use a cleaner product if you want, but filling it up with a good higher octane gas will probably take care of it. I would expect some rough idle etc though until the contaminated gas left in the lines gets through the engine.

You guys are seriously overreacting......1 gallon of 40:1 fuel would have less than 3.5 ounces of oil in it.....oil that is designed to be burned.....your car burns oil everyday, you probably got more heavily cantaminted fuel that one time you stop at the redneck gas station.
^^^Exactly...I use TC-W3 2 stroke synthetic oil in all my vehicles in a 1oz to 5 gallons of gas ratio which is like 1:500. It's cheaper and just as effective to buy a gallon of 2 stroke ashless than half that of these oil based cleaners like fp-60, lucas...etc. They run better than ever....so the rough idle isn't from the oil.
it's killed my mpg from 30 highway to 10, it caused it to randomly misfire which was the code,p0300, it was showin, i've changed out the plugs and its still misfiring, wat should i do now
I am inclined to say there is no way that one gallon of 40:1 is the cause of that. any other codes?. What did the plugs look like? What color was the oily fuel you sucked out? was there any black/thick brown liquid?
Well since the problem started after the premix was added (was this old premix, perhaps a small amount left over (and thick if it was not shaken).
I'd say you've got some sort of gunk in the fuel line and possibly fouling the injectors.
I'd get rid of the gas in the tank, get the fuel lines and injectors cleaned out, new fuel filter, then use fresh good gasoline and see if it changes. If it doesn't, time to take it to a shop.
Pull the oil dipstick also and smell for gasoline, if so I'd do an oil change too...I wonder if when the car wouldn't start initially (causing you to add the gas from the premix can) if you flooded the engine in trying to get it going. Contrary to popular belief, fuel injected cars can and do flood in certain start situations.
Good luck!
