4 grand to spend tvs or turbo?

ive been debating forever now what to do..im at a mental block, i have 4 grand in grant money coming in about a week and wanna build a solid 350 whp cobalt that can corner like beast, i dont care to much about 1/4 mile times but i want a hella fast street car. my options are obvious but i keep backing out of the tvs because i see no one getting over 300 whp, i can get a used 20 g from one of my best friends for 300 dollars and a front mount for 50 hes gonna junk his talon and build a bug. anyways if anyone can show me a 350 whp tvs cobalt without nos or new pisons or ported head..ill do that in the future but for now i dont wanna rip apart the car its my dd. i love the blower but i love the tq and bov of a turbo..any help or vendors that wanna hit me up for a big parts list?

The reason people are not getting over 300whp on the tvs is because they are afraid to pulley down, aren't running valve springs and or ported head, and may possibly not have the tuning knowledge they should. If you do anything, I recommend going with stronger internals and a TVS, while your in there port the head and toss in some valve springs. You will have absolutely no problem hitting 350whp.

Agreed. I'm at about 280whp with the TVS on the stock pulley (3.1) and all I have engine wise are the essentials: a heat exchanger, full exhaust, intake, 60lb injectors, and a custom tune. Its runs solid and is really reliable, which is what I need right now.

If/when I put in pistons, rods, valve springs, retainers, pulley down and port the head I'll easily be over 300whp and very close to 350whp. And If I added meth to that equation its easily over.

Its all about what you put into it.

You really just need the TVS, 60lb injectors based on you sig. Then your where I am at. I would also recommend a full 3" exhaust. I'm running hahn 3" with zzp 3" catless and hahn header.

From there what ever money you have left which should be an easy 2.2 grand, you could get everything else and a tune. (This is assuming you are installing everything yourself)

Grant money?? Is there a turbo grant that I don't know about? Put the money in savings or a Roth IRA.

my mods are in my sig, with about 1 hr worth of tuning i put down 290 whp on the stock pulley and no meth . now i added a smaller pulley and meth and with a little more tuning i feel ill hit 320 whp, at least 315 whp with meth and a 2.9 pulley, anyway. the 290 whp was on a mustang dyno. so lets just say it put s down 315 whp,im going to have the intake cnc ported and the cooling cores in the intake opened up thats will increase whp by about 10 at the very least, now add a cnc head thats atleast 20 whp and lets add meth ,thats at least 15 whp,so lets add all this up.

290 whp stock pulley and no meth.
10 whp on intake
20 whp on cnc head
15 whp on meth
10 whp with 2.9 pulley wich is the next size down.
so that puts us at 345 whp and im feel im low balling im not a dyno but with these mods i can see 360 whp with no problem.

area would be the one to talk to .

Valve springs are VERY important with the TVS. 8 Grand is key!

Ported head and timing more so. I have the lightweight flywheel so there will be no revving to 8 grand for me.

I'm a little over 300 to the wheels on 22* of timing, 11.8 AFR, meth and bolt ons. 3.1 pulley still.

Just curious why you think you cannot rev higher because of the lightweight flywheel? If its a quality piece, balancing should not be an issue...

Internals were balanced with a heavier flywheel. I have the SPEC Stage 2 Clutch with the aluminum lightweight flywheel.

Just not wanting to risk anything. Plus I read up on it somewhere, I'd have to find it.

Lighweight flywheel can cause misfires due to its weight.

TVS Is gonna be fun.. different power band... Its not like your going to lose to a civic or something if you dont go turbo... but by far the power difference is amazing...

When i tell you that i can litterally get in my car if im in a bad mood... i hit the gas and just hear the noises of the turbo and it puts a smile on my face...

The TVS is obviously limited at this moment... If you are expecting to hit 300-315hp in your first dyno run with just a "basic tune".... your going to hurt your own feelings... The fun comes when you take the time to tune your car to make it the beast that some people have already unleashed..

The turbo will by far make more power.... always will.. the s20g and the gt3071 are both very nice turbos for the car... will spool a little before 4k... and will pull you into the seat...

I have 282whp and 281 tq with the eaton (2.7, 60's, CAI, exhaust, cobra HE). The TVS folks are being conservative from what I've gathered.

I'd build the motor (forged pistons, head work, valve springs) and call it a day, maybe even go with 10:1 pistons.
If I wanted to make a FUN car, I'd throw in a GT3076

I say get a tvs...i had one and loved it. However just didnt like how i spent so much money on a 4 banger so im selling the car today and picking my 370z up. Like many people said, valve springs are a key. I hit 281whp at 7000rpm...my rev limit was 7200 but didnt want to go any higher...the power never dropped off at 7000rpm, still had a steep climb.

What were your mods to hit 281? That seems about avg for a 3.1 with bolt ons, tune and ~17* of timing with mid 11's AFR
