Just Removed Converter! LOUD! Please help

Just took the converter off the car and it sounds like total ****! I don't mind if it's loud but it sounds like total rice. I was wondering if I changed the factory resonator out for a Vibrant Ultra quiet one will it make a difference in the sound? I don't wanna bother if it's just make it a bit quieter. I mean it's VERY LOUD!

Yes...of course it's loud...exactly did you remove it in the first place?

It was plugged up and rattling. Not gonna take it to GM with with stuff I've got on it. I knew if was gonna be loud, I'm not stupid. But I didn't think it would have the loud rattling-bee sound to it. Like I said, I wanna make it sound deeper and a little quiter. Thats the question I asked...

take it they'll replace it under warranty. I did, and they tried to blame the cams, but they did it anyways. then warned me if it happened again I was on my own.
BS, they know very well that the cams had nothing to do with it.
I'm beginning to suspect that the cats are going because the car is running so rich.
I can't think of any other reasons.

Alot of the sound quality depends on what exhaust you have. I have the GMPP ported manifold, no cat (2.5" custom race pipe), and a Corsa Touring cat-back. Very deep sound, and it sounds good! It is very loud, but the Corsa makes it sound less like a 4 cylinder. There is some slight buzzing at certain rpm's, but nothing crazy. Keep in mind, none of the cat-backs that are available were designed for cars that are catless. You should've heard my car with no cat and Corsa sport! Holy cow!! Try a different muffler. If you've got the money, get a Corsa Touring. I've heard 2 different Supercharged Cobalts with no cats and Corsa touring, and they sound great! Hope I've helped somehow.

resonator only gets rid of some of the baffel but the bee buzzing noise will still be there. If your that concerned about it making lots of noise throw another free flowing cheapy muffler between the pipe coming down from the header to the other muffler on the other end. Throw a o2 Simulator in the mix for no CEL.

Great alternative for those who want to quiet it down but still have the deep sound without it being too buzy.

I'm worried about the flow though. I'd just go buy a Magnaflow converter if I knew for sure it flowed better than the factory one and if I knew it would quite it down. What about a chambers high flow muffler with the factory resonator and no cat? Would that flow and sound better?

Well, most place just hook somthing up to your diagnostic port and check for codes. If you've tuned your O2 sensor codes out, your good. I have also heard of catless cars passing if they're tuned right. Worse case scenario, pay an exhaust shop to make you some flanges so that you can put the cat on for testing, and then put the race pipe on for other days.

How much did it cost to have your cat removed?

With the cat gone, you've gotten rid of a big restriction. The piping and factory resonator are only slight restrictions compared to the cat. Going with that muffler will improve flow, but I don't know enough about that particular muffler to tell you if it'll improve the quality of sound.

You guys see major gains from this?

The exhaust systems for my car (see sig) is designed to either remove or add a high flow cat in place of the 2 factory cats. With a reflash we get about 50 hp and 75 ft-lbs of torque in the lower end of the curve around 30ish at the peak. We get even more with a dyno tune.

I'm kinda curious what kind of power removing the cat on the SS/SC frees up....

I felt a major difference in power! Totally woke the car up! Now if I can just get it quiter. Magnoflow sugjested for me to put on one of their convertors but I really want a converter. I asked them about putting a chambered muffler on instead and they told me it would be louder with a chambered muffler than a straight through? Doesn't sound right to me.

If you are concerned with sound levels and emissions regards but still want performance, Random Technology has one of the best high flow cats in the market.

They come in a vast array of universal sizes. The 7000 series flows UBER high!

I'm not concerned with the emissions part of it. I only want it to be quieter. And I hate the sound of it. I only wanna change the sound.

A cat will help with levels, or you may want to consider some resonators....

How many resonators would I need? I don't want to restict the flow very much. I know your converters flow good but I'm trying to go cheep on this.

1 might do the trick, but it if it's THAT bad, you might need 2.

I just put on the full cat back from vibrant. and yeah, its loud. hopefully adding the ultra quiet resonator will quiet it down. it sounds now like it has striaght pipes and it still has the factory cat. of well, i might end up selling it and putting my factory crap back on.
