Air box mod on 2.2! --2.4 compatible (with pics)

WARNING! NOT SAI COMPATIBLE

Click here to see if yours have SAI (late 2006+ have them)

so today me and g5mike put on a modified air box on my cobalt

its basically a cut out stock air box with a cone filter attached to the end. to get the 3" inch filter on there you'll have to use some force since the plastic tube is 3 1/4 " and we cant find any 3 1/4 " inch filter. but a 3" K&N will fit nicely ....just use a little force to get it in

the stock filter clamp wont fit in there so you'll have to get a bigger one

so far the intake sounds AWSOME and i started to get backfire from the SS muffler

well time for more driving...will update more soon

Did you have to cut the airbox in order to get that filter on I assume?

yes....cut the air box and make it into a tube...(forgot to take pictures of it)

from the first picture you can see where the stock air box used to sit. cut it out and grind out the extra plastic and it'll become a tube. then just stick the filter there and ur done!

the best part is, the filter will sit nicely on the bottom half of the stock air box.

hows the throttle response, sound etc.etc..You know when I was pressing your gas peddle you can get a better response by tightening your throttle cable, you have a 2.2 so I don't think it is a computer controlled throttle body like on the 2.4

once you get a braket, i think it would look better without the bottom part of the box

i gotta say the cobalt has pretty good sound insulation from the engine. from the inside with windows up it doesnt sound too different. but when the windows are down its a completely different story

Mike, if you know anything about car alarms, the one that he set off was an aftermarket one. However, it has the aftermarket car alarm sound (the 5 different sounds) and also the honk sound. I don't think a Prelude would have a factory security system.

The muffler will always sound different from the outside and, of course, the outside will sound better than the inside

Ha!Ha unless you are hammering it out of the driveway he will never know or you can always say it is the muffler and if he suspects anything undre the hood you can take a few minutes to switch it out.
