View Full Version : Detailed Specs for 2006 Cobalt
Firenze 05-02-2005, 12:55 AM <img src="http://cobaltss.net/articles/info1.jpg" align="left" border="0" hspace="5" vspace="5">I found this link at another message board. Select Chevrolet Car, then "Print Book", then "Cobalt" "Print Model" and finally "Print" to see a .pdf file detailing the specs on all the various trim levels. As reported earlier, the base trim will be now known as LS, LT becomes what LS used to be, LTZ is the new high-end sedan. In addition to the SS/SC coupe, there will be SS coupes and SS sedans as well.
The SS trim will feature a 2.4L Ecotec with 172hp @ 6200rpm and 162lb of torque @ 5000 rpm. Recaro seats and LSD will be only available on the SS/SC trim and will also have an exclusive on "Performance Handling Suspension" (the SS gets "Sport Suspension"). Both manual and automatic transmissions will be available on the SS.
The only new changes I can see are the new colours of Laser Blue Metallic and Majestic Amethyst. Arrival Blue Metallic will be dropped later this fall. There is no mention of Light Tarnished Silver or Stealth Gray as mentioned in the 2006 Colours thread so I guess they have been dropped.

And for the curious, you can see the entire 2006 GM lineup there as well if you're interested in any of The General's other vehicles.
ETA: Oh yeah, all the 2006 Cobalts will also have a couple small "GM" badges on the sides by the wheels.
ssstraub 05-02-2005, 01:29 AM Wow, thanks for posting this!
JonyyB 05-02-2005, 01:44 AM Thank you for the good info! I'll put this on the front page

Vendian 05-02-2005, 01:51 AM Sweet. Very informative. I just now noticed you can't get the majestic amythyst for the SS S/C. Someone else posted you could, oh well, I was only very partially considering it.
PenguinPIE 05-02-2005, 03:29 AM that sucks....LT is gonna be 2005's LS?!.......that means my LT will depreciate more?!.....i mean when ppl look at my LT ...they would think its the 2006 LT........but its actually the 2005 LT......i mean...not everyone would know that the 2005 LT is the top sedan model........sigh...that sucks...
Nightcrawler 05-02-2005, 10:43 AM Anybody know why they are ditching Arrival Blue Metallic? I love that shade of blue. Has anyone seen Laser Blue yet? I believe the Impala has a Laser Blue option for this mode year, but I haven't seen it. It wonder how it compares.
jmonte345 05-02-2005, 05:33 PM That site is awesome, good find.
So are the 2.4's still only going to be automatic...?
Archplsm 05-02-2005, 07:22 PM I don't see any changes for the SS/sc other than some color

I know. My LS Coupe (formerly a very well equipped mid-level trim) will become known as the base level. I'm not even sure why GM would even do this in the first place. Why not just keep the trim levels as they are? Base sedan & coupe, LS sedan & coupe, LT Sedan, SS sedan & coupe, and finally the SS/SC coupe.
Z06Kat 05-02-2005, 09:43 PM so they still arent adding heated seats and we still have to buy the armrest seperate

They built a new paint shop at the plant and with that different paint

Do you know how to get the same listing for the 2005 Cobalt, just like this one?
I found out how. Just change the address to 2005 DUH!!!
thehemi 05-03-2005, 11:04 AM No factory LSD or Performance Handling Suspension for SS sedans. Doh.
Although I suppose a Sport Suspension should not be too shabby, but I'm
not sure why I should not be allowed to get an LSD on the SS sedan. Glad
to see its at least going to be available in both transmission choices.

I don't have the LSD on my SS/SC and it's not that terrible. I guess if you were racing the car on the track quite a bit it would be a nice addition.
I am glad to hear it's going to be in manual or auto as well.
xtremeGM 05-03-2005, 03:10 PM I'm glad to see they are offering the SS in both auto and manual
ssstraub 05-03-2005, 07:53 PM I'm glad to see they are offering the SS in both auto and manual
I know you didn't say SC, but just to be clear, the SS/SC still does not come with an automatic. Only the regular SS.
clodhopper06 05-03-2005, 08:17 PM Anybody know why they are ditching Arrival Blue Metallic? I love that shade of blue. Has anyone seen Laser Blue yet? I believe the Impala has a Laser Blue option for this mode year, but I haven't seen it. It wonder how it compares.
the laser blue basically looks like a blue and purple mix....burple i guess....i dont like it. no man should ever drive a laser blue car....its quite a feminine color. i have also seen it on the equinox
stlurbanpunk 05-04-2005, 12:39 AM Perfect..... SS coupe: 17" wheels, manual... the works!
can't wait!!!!! ;) ;)
hokman 05-04-2005, 04:08 AM Does anyone know if the 2.4 VVL 172bhp motor will go into the malibu? The specs look really impressive, almost matching the class leader altima 2.5, using 100cc less. The 2.2 is too weak for the big malibu.
Spectre 05-05-2005, 06:14 PM So has anyone found any info on the LTZ?
stlurbanpunk 05-07-2005, 03:32 AM If i'm not mistaken, the ultima is a v6, maybe. to closer match it would to compare the subaru's engine. The 2.5 boxer 4. but either way it is impressive. I think the LTZ will just be a loaded cobalt with some new features, my guess.
RockTheSVT 05-08-2005, 11:27 PM That's something I've been waiting to read for a good long while now. Thank you very much. Haha, I have a feeling that car is gonna give my SVT alot of competition.

Its Altima...and it has the 2.5L 4 cly as a base engine and the 3.5L VQ as an option. Nevertheless, the Altima is a much larger car then the Cobalt.
As for the increased aplication of the 2.4L--I would expect it. The Saturn Vue for example uses the 2.2L as base---now thats a real weak engine for that as well.
G6
HHR
Solstice
Cobalt/Pursuit
Malibu seems likely too.
AutoX 05-11-2005, 03:38 PM so i am considering getting a cobalt and i was wondering if anyone knew when the 2006 would start hitting the dealerships? debating on getting a 2005 at reduced price(becuase of the 2006 being out) or just getting a 2006
ssstraub 05-11-2005, 08:21 PM so i am considering getting a cobalt and i was wondering if anyone knew when the 2006 would start hitting the dealerships? debating on getting a 2005 at reduced price(becuase of the 2006 being out) or just getting a 2006
If you are getting the SS/SC, then I doubt they are going to cut the price much, since they are rare. If it is any other model, then they probably will cut the price.
I think they are going to be all 2006 from June-July on. Not sure exactly when the 06's hit the dealers though.
Nightcrawler 05-12-2005, 10:07 AM The information provided on this board suggests 2006 production will not start until July 17th I believe. So, I wouldn't expect to see a 2006 at dealers any earlier than August.
SS SCHGD 05-13-2005, 09:02 PM man, I was hoping for a majestic Amethyst SS/SC.....You think GM will still make one for me at a extra price?
cobalt7801 05-29-2005, 12:50 PM Good info! Does anyone know what the price will be on the SS non-s/c? I'm going to get my Cobalt next weekend :cssNET: and was wondering if I should hold off on it. That sucks that they're getting rid of the Arrival Blue. It just so happens that was the color I'm getting mine in. Any pics of the Laser Blue?
Mike_42 05-29-2005, 06:17 PM since the dealers anywhere near me all seem to not be able to order any 05 Cobalts anymore, I was looking to get an 06
The only color I liked on the 05 is the Arrival Blue
and on the GM site all the " Laser Blue Metallic" cars I could spot ( Monte Carlo, Impala) seem to be boring looking blue color
So I really want to find some good "real world" photos of a car in this Laser Blue Metallic, I'd really rather not buy my Cobalt and be wanting to re-paint it as soon as I've got it... :(
(I remember when they first were showing the Cobalt on the GM site, the Arrival Blue pics there didnt match the real world pictures I saw on here)
Firenze 05-29-2005, 09:16 PM Here's a small pic of a Laser Blue SUV. Arrival Blue will still be available for the early '06 orders. It doesn't get discontinued until the fall.
http://img263.echo.cx/img263/5982/laserblue0hg.jpg
Nightcrawler 05-31-2005, 01:26 PM Are there any disadvantages or problems we should be aware of knowingly ordering a paint that will be discontinued soon?
FunCrusher 06-01-2005, 02:17 AM Yes, that's right, today is the first day that chevy is taking orders for the 06 model. I was going to buy the 05 ss, but when I discovered the differential wasn't as advertised, I decided to wait. I have a conection at the dealership, which enabled me to push my order to first priority. Ohh man I can't wait!! Finally I will get the entire package that I expected in the first place. Should be around 6 to 8 weeks before I get my hands on the car, but I don't care about the wait. The local dealership offers a thousand dollar discount if I pay for my car as soon as the vin number is available, which should be next week sometime. This is great news, so anyone who is interested in an 06, ask your dealer about the discount offered to those who pay in advance. Hopefully we can all reap the benefits of the deal, not just me.
Enufftogoaround 06-02-2005, 12:28 AM Do any of you have any idea when it will be released? A good guesstimate like in the 2-3 month range of when u think?
FunCrusher 06-04-2005, 02:28 AM The 06 Cobalt is due for release in late june, or early july. This has been one hell of an ordeal! these new 06 ss Cobalts are very hard to get. When my order went through, GM accepted it, but they didn't start building right away. They wanted the owner of the chevy dealership to order TWENTY regular Cobalts in order to build the ss! GM is hurting very badly on the financial end of things as some of you know, but these kind of tactics are flat out wrong! After two days of arguing with people at the factory, the GM rep was able to get my car pushed to the top of the build pile, and avoided the ordering of twenty Cobalts. GM stated to my connection that they will not allow any dealer mark-ups on cobalts besides the ss because of the huge blow they have taken over the last few years. This is very good news for consumers such as ourselves, so expect the 06 Cobalts to be priced at rock bottom. In the end, I was told that I will recieve my 06 SS in the middle of july, which is roughly six weeks. I will be one of the first to have the short shifter and limited slip differential and I can't wait. I would love to hear any similar stories some of you might have about attempting to order an 06. Surely I'm not the only one! The ss is harder to get than the new corvette was when it was released. Mind blowing!
ToxicPoison 06-04-2005, 10:27 AM Not to nitpick, but are you getting an 06 2.4L SS or a 2.0L SS/SC? Or are the 06 SS/SC 2.2L?
God I really hate this naming scheme..
FunCrusher 06-04-2005, 01:32 PM I will be getting the 2.0 since it will be the fastest production car. although the SS that isn't supercharged will have 170 hp and will be available in four door, which will have a certain amount of appeal for some, does nothing for me. I want the coupe and I want the fastest model available. The 2.0 is the only engine that is factory made with a supercharger.

They havent started to build 06' models yet.... the date is set for the middle of this month

Not possible, a dealer is not forced to order more of the same model year in order to get an allocation for a car rather they go by how many you sold the previous model year.

Hopefully this isnt your dad like you used in another post to say that NO g85 ss's were built in 05' if its that source than we know its wrong.

There it is again with the LSD crap... your basically goign to piss off members on this board that have G85 with the LSD. You will not be the first with a short shifter they ALL have it. Adn also you will not be the first with an LSD. PLEASEEEE stop the lies
FunCrusher 06-04-2005, 02:02 PM God, you have a lot to learn about the car business. In most cases you would be right about the number of cars that had to be ordered, but not this time. Once again, I DO NOT DEAL with sales people, I deal with the factory. The GM factory did attempt to make the dealership I'm going through order twenty regular cobalts along with the SS, but because of my connection this was pushed aside and my order went through. Here is my order
5-23 Preliminary order Accepted
5-23 Preliminary order added
5-24 order Re-edited
5-31 Accepted by GM
5-31 Order preferenced
6-1 Accepted by production control
Chevy4Life85 06-04-2005, 02:06 PM My uncle has owned 2 dealerships and now manages 4..... what else do I need to know your wrong about having to roder 20 and your really wrong about the LSD... why dont you explain how people on here have 05' cobalts with LSD?
FunCrusher 06-04-2005, 02:19 PM I have an inside connection, and if you know how the car business works, allocation can be thrown out of the window if you have enough pull, which I do. Now, about the differential. Now, I will admit that I did make a mistake about the differential. When I attempted to place my order, I was told that I could not order an 05 with the differential. I called back the rep to ask if I had misunderstood about the availability of the differential, and I did. There were some built, but they have not been available to order for the last few months. I misunderstood, so I apologize. I thought he meant that they weren't any built at all. In the end, regardless of my mistake, 580 cobalts were built over the PAST WEEK, so you don't know a damn thing about production dates!!!!
Chevy4Life85 06-04-2005, 02:25 PM yes maybe 580 2005 cobalts production for 05' doesnt stop until the 17th.... and you just now admitted to being wrong about the G85 yet you say you called your rep and double checked like you did it a month ago... its Sat by the way mind givin me the office's weekend number?
FunCrusher 06-04-2005, 02:34 PM The weekend number? I know the GM rep personally. Just because he told me that 580 cobalts were built over the past week does not mean that he got this information today. Yesterday was Friday, or have you forgotten?
Chevy4Life85 06-04-2005, 02:35 PM The weekend number? I know the GM rep personally. Just because he told me that 580 cobalts were built over the past week does not mean that he got this information today. Yesterday was Friday, or have you forgotten?
Chill bro and I asked you how you just realized you were wrong about the G85, not the number built, though I'd like to know how thats possible that GM stopped builing the 05's 15 days early and started the 06's that much already
Chevy4Life85 06-04-2005, 02:38 PM Dont take it personally either but i'm pissed off becuase one of the 2 things you claimed was already found out to be wrong and now we get to see if theres any truth behing the 06's being built.
I just think its ashame you came on here and destroyed one of the best threads with 06' info by putting out false info on the 05'
FunCrusher 06-04-2005, 02:39 PM When I attempted to place my order for an 05 about two months ago, I was told the differential was not available for order until 06. I assumed that they had not been built for the 05, but what I did was misunderstand, and I do apologize for writing that none of them were built. I should have double checked with the rep, but I didn't, and I was wrong for doing so.
Chevy4Life85 06-04-2005, 02:48 PM Just for that I hope my 06' comes before yours.... also please cough up an order # this way we can make sure your not totally full of BS.... this would help you out a lot after a bad start here...
a lot of people claim to have insider friends... if you cant even get us an order number then I think some people wont belive you at all.
im a little slow but bare with me the ss trim will have the avalible auto or manual trans but will the SS Supercharged have both options?
bondrey 06-05-2005, 11:45 AM Could someone post the actual differences between the 05 to 06 SS/SC?
I know the diff is different, but what about susp, shifter, and ???
Doesn't the '05 already have short shifter?
Is the '05 SS/SC suspension what they are calling the 'performance' susp on '06 or is it the same as the 'sport' susp on '06 non-sc? Or somewhere inbetween?
Thanks
irocz85 06-05-2005, 12:53 PM im a little slow but bare with me the ss trim will have the avalible auto or manual trans but will the SS Supercharged have both options?
No the SS/SC will still only be offered with a manual.

The way i understand it is that they will be identical except for the G85 performance package. PS they do come with a short throw shifter already, and there is a difference in the suspension on an SS and a non-SS.
Chevy4Life85 06-05-2005, 01:02 PM NOTHING IS CHANGING..... the 05' SS s/c will be exactly the same as the 06' The G85 package will be the same in both... idk what anyone means by it being diff, if you lok at all the options the only thing that ahs changed is you will be able to switch off the passenger airbgas in the 06'
bondrey 06-05-2005, 02:21 PM was just thinking that if the options were changing maybe the perf susp of next year would be better than the one this year....that's all
thanks guys, feel much better now about having bought my '05 SS yesterday :)
now if only it had limited-slip and recaros :( ...wonder how much the diff is gonna cost to change out later on this year.
anywho, thanks for the info guys.
Beenthere 06-09-2005, 06:42 AM Hey Guys:
I haven't seen the orange metallic SS yet... I'm thinking about ordering it ...but??
Also I'm a lil bit concerned about the rear spoiler... it looks kinda teeny bopper to me... any other options ... probably have to go after market for something?
Does anybody know any good chev dealers in maryland ... near DC area?
Thanx

I have a Sunburst Orange Metallic SS/SC, and I love the colour. It looks much better in person than in photos. Go to your dealer on a bright, sunny day, and look at some of the Orange Cobalt's on the lot (likely base coupes). On a dark day, it'll look almost coppery, but when the sun is shining, its a nice bright orange, and it really sparkles...
I'm still undecided on the wing. But yeah, your only real option if you don't like it is to hit the aftermarket - or maybe swap it for the wing off a regular Cobalt.
No idea about Maryland, sorry :)
Beenthere 06-09-2005, 11:01 PM Thanx for the info on the orange metallic... im going to follow your suggestion.

yellowCobaltSS 07-22-2005, 04:13 PM OK,
So I am reading through the forums and any other information I can get about the 2006 cobalt ss, or ss/sc, and from what I gather is that the 2006 model is going to feature the 2.4 non-supercharged engine. Now the specs are not to bad, running 173 naturally should have decent preformance outputs, but it doesn't seem to compare to the 210 hp supercharged version. I am wondering if the 2005 is going to be the only model with the supercharger? If so, it will probably hold a good amount of value. Also, I havn't seen another one around my home town of Porltand, OR yet, and I'm starting to think that there isn't going to be very many 2005's made. Anybody know something that I am missing?
bondrey 07-22-2005, 09:33 PM you can get the '06 in a 2dr ss/sc like '05. there will also be a n/a 2.4L ss model w/ different rims, gfx, spoiler, and other stuff....can get that one in 2 and 4dr...but all the specs should be posted toward beginning of this post and on the chevy website.
dj4all 07-22-2005, 11:37 PM OK,

I believe the 2006 SC's will be as limited as the 2005's, however, there will more 2006's produced mainly because the build date started 9 months before the 2005's. I think the 2005's will hold good value because of their limited production. The only reason I didn't get one is because none of them were available with the G85 option in Canada
I still think I made a good decision holding off on the 2006.
