Slipping clutch? Read this. Tranny pro's read too.

I've got good news and bad news. What do you want first? Good news? Okay. I just got off the phone with a service manager at the dealership where I bought my SS. I had the car serviced to fix the dents in the back from an accident I was in awhile back. I asked them to take a look at the clutch to make sure everything was okay because it was slipping in the higher RPM ranges and it was affecting me on highway onramps. They did, and found a damaged spring that got way too hot at one point and this was the cause of the slipping. Here's the good news, it’s covered under warranty. Here's the bad news, the part is on NATIONAL backorder. So they're in the process of putting my car back together, I've been given a number like I'm on an organ waiting list...

Just thought I would let you guys know.

after only 5500 miles, my clutch is about done too. it wont grab 2nd or 3rd gear worth a **** above 3k rpm. i hesitate to take it to the dealer since they will obviously try to rip me off and not warranty it claiming i abuse it. but c'mon. 5500 miles??!!

screw the dealership...go after market...then u will have no worries...but I know what you are talking about with the whole clutch slipping...i have about 4500 miles on mine...I do know how to drive a shift...so crappy shifting isn't a factor...if u drive the coblat like it really does have a supercharger...it kills ur clutch...it just isn't made to horse around on...taking off at higher rpms and what not...just burns it up...a stock clutch is made pretty much for normal driving...once I save up enough I am going after market for sure...at least stage 2 or 3.

im going to say it depends on your car.

i've been driving a stick for as long as i can remember.
unfortunately, i was given the privilage of driving a 2004 STi every once in a while. i burned the hell outta that clutch w/o realizing it until now. that was good practice (LOL!). now im at 6,000miles on my cobalt and the clutch holds pretty strong, even with my "way more than spirited driving"

case in point, you may think you dont abuse the clutch, but **** happens.

well i drove the car like it was ment to be driven. and everyone says this but i really do know how to drive. and i woulda proved it if it didnt rain when i arrived at the track ...

ne ways .. my clutch had a drastic ending. clutch held STRONG LIKE BULL and felt lucky that i wasnt having the same problems like some people on here.. parked it at my friends house n played some cards.. my boy got out early and was antsy so i let him drive my car (he has had all sticks but got a good deal on an 02 mustang GT auto that --even i said---he couldnt pass up--so he needs stick driving once in a while).. hes the only person other than my father i trust driving my car. needless to say he came back and in normal driving the clutch went to mush.. BANG just like that...

IF YOUR FRONT TIRES ARE BALD GET NEW TIRES BEFORE YOU BRING IT IN TO THE DEALER.. i had 4500miles and bc the tires were bald (bc i just love fast turns) he wasnt supposed to honor the warranty on the clutch (bc of the low miles).. but after talking with me, he did

it would be interesting to see how many of the clutch failures are related to first time manual drivers cause i've driven clutch all my life, i drive this car hard, i have no slippage at 8k miles

Thats my theory.

7200 miles with stage 2 and clutch has only slipped on me three times. Twice at the track. It only happened on the first hard runs of the day and it only happened in first gear after a hard! launch.

Something that atleast makes me feel more confident in the stock clutch is to pump it with the car is started but in neutral while im staging. When ever Ive done this ive nailed all my shifts and the clutch grabbed hard.

Put Stage 2 on the car and tell me if it doesn't slip! If it slips once, it's only going to get worse.
