Random power loss..? and some icing on my cake...

I own an 06 ss/sc.
I was driving home from work tonight and was on my way to ultimate frisbee practice. I decided to stop in at a sunoco gas station on the way and fill up because gas was cheaper then it had been all week. i still had about 1/4 tank left but figured i might as well since its here. i have only ever put ultra 94 in my car since i got it (dec 31 05). i have had 1 oil change and that was about a month ago at the local chevy dealership and i have 11200km so far.
anyways after i fill up, i only have about a 5 minute drive before im where i need to go. i am approaching my final turn, stop at the stop sign, then make a right, get to about 3500rpm and shift into second then all of the sudden i have no power and my rpm is at 0 but the car is still on. i try to give it gas and nothing. down shift and give more gas and still nothing.
i coast into the parking lot i am going to be parking in and don't quite make it into a spot. i stop along the side and turn the car off. start it back up again and it turns on then chugs a little then the rpms drop and the same thing... no power. i turn it off and then try again.. same thing.
at this point my buddy pulls up and i wave him down. he knows a bit about cars so i tell him my car wont work! he tells me to pop the hood after he makes me turn it on and hear what happens.
he checks a few things and says to turn it on again and give it a bit of gas. i do it and it stays on! so i turn it off and on one more to see if it was a fluke. it worked 2 more times and i didn't have to give it any gas. GREAT! it was just something weird but it fixed itself. then i notice the engine light is on while i am parking the car.
i turn it off and on and it still had the engine light on.
i turned it off, left it alone for 5 minutes, turned it back on and no more engine light! wicked!?!? i try it 2 more times and it looks all clear now.
so i finish my practice 3 hours later, turn the car on and all is still well. im still a little weirded out, but happy my car is working again.
im all happy and ready to drive home, so i shift into reverse and the top of my stock shifter falls off and rolls under my passenger seet...... and that icing on my cake...

so any ideas on what could have been my problem? anything to worry about? should i visit the dealer?

..sorry about the long story but i figured i should make it detailed to save all the questions i might get asked.

-Brad

Maybe it's the Sunoco gas. Everytime I go to the USA, regardless of the vehicle I'm driving, if I put in Sunoco, the car runs like crap. I can't explain it, but the moment I get throught the tank it's right back to normal.

i've been using the same gas for over 5 months though and haven't had a problem yet. isn't it supposed to be the best gas available at your average gas station? i don't know anyother place that has 94.
but from what im hearing on here and from friends, it does sound like it could have been a minor temporary problem with the gas.

It is good gas...but at the price...few people buy it. That means it sits in the fill station tanks longer which gives more opportunities for degradation and contaminants to get into it...including water.

Run the tank out and try from somewhere else. You'll probably notice a difference right away. I've had the same happen with other vehicles, but fortunately not my 'balt yet.

As for the shift knob...I'd definitely take it back to the dealer for an explanation/repair.

Sounds a lot like the crankshaft posisition sensor that's been afflicting so many people. I would get it checked before it happens again and you're stranded somewhere.
