Whats the best engine you can drop into a cobalt?

What is the best engine you can drop into the cobalt? I'm able to get a cobalt SS body everything there except the engine is dead, lots of water damage in it. The body is fine though, but since I will probally have to put a new engine in it i'm thinking about alternatives? Anyone know anything?

Unless you want to do some heavy duty fabricating work, your best alternative is either the 2.0L supercharged from an SS/SC or a 2.0L turbocharged from like an HHR GT or the Saturn Sky GT. I'm not sure if teh 2.0L turbo engine is in production yet. It may be an 07 intro..

These are cars are electronically controlled beasts. If you put a different engine in it, you're gonna have to get creative on how you are going to control it, and expect certain things in the car to no longer work correctly. Our ECM's supply data to other systems.

Everything you said made good sense until this. There is no GMPP bolt on turbo kit. There is a HRC kit for the 2.4L engine however.

A lot of J-Body guys droped in the 3.4 OHV V6 and supercharged it. I remember it was good for maybe 220-230 horsepower but it fit into the engine bay real good.

Not worth the re-fab required in this case. Just do as others have suggested and buy a crate LSJ, that way you don't hafta worry about all of the ECU nightmares

Unless you're confident enough in your skills/bankroll to go full standalone. In that case your pocketbook is the limit

The LK9 is a 2.0L Turbo Ecotech from the Saab 93 is a FWD application that uses the F35 transmission and the whole package will drop right into the cobalt. You would want to make sure that it uses the P12 ECM, otherwise you have a wiring nightmare on your hands. If it uses the P12, just buy the ECM from the same car that the engine comes out of and everything should work as is. Otherwise, I say either buy a LSJ crate engine or pick up a 2.4L and put on one of the bolt on turbo kits.

sounds like the perfect opertunaty to get a build up LSJ, swap the pistons, and valve springs, larger injectors, and any bolt on you want. 350+WHP should not be a problem along with some tuning

^^That's what I'm saying, buy a crate or pull one from a junk yard, build it up and don't worry about all the headaches that come with major swaps (ECU, fab, etc)

If you're planning on going that crazy you'll hafta start worrying about tranny and drive shafts etc.

But you could take an LSJ crate motor,,,

Replace the pistons, do a little head work, and have a mean little 8k revving supercharged beast. All on the stock harnesses and ECU, thank god for HP tuners, lol

you don't really need the race block, how much power do you really plan on putting down.
the LSJ with pistons and new Valve springs should easily keep you safe to about 450HP, and thats alot while still being conservative with my numbers, your going to have to upgrade alot of other things before you'll want to push your motor beyond that

I think in stock trim, the LK9 puts out 265 hp, but as with the LSJ, the sky is the limit. It is just a matter of how many $$$$ you are willing to trade for a bigger woody.

LS-Jr cannot be beaten!

The LS-turbo motor is a good one for lots of power, factory turbo so 300 WHP isnt a thing beyond more boost and bigger injectors. THe LSK is a direct drop in so that's also an option. THe 2.4 on the other hand will be a headache IMO

The 2.0T in the Saab is only 210 hp - it's not the same engine that's going into the Saturn / Pontiac roadsters.
