View Full Version : Are you concerned with long term reliability of the 2.4?
thatdaveguy 07-20-2006, 04:25 AM And have you had any problems with the motor itself thus far?
GM has not had a good history with high output premium fuel motors in small cars. (Quad 4 in Chevrolet Beretta's come to mind...)
davenportdesigns 07-20-2006, 04:46 AM well im selling my 2.4 i hate that piece of shit. i've had it into the shop 5 thimes in like that last 3 months. It wasnt all the cars fault though. The GM shop i went to didnt know shit about what they were doing. So im selling my car and getting an evo8 haha

well the Qaud 4 was a long time ago. The Ecotec was designed from input from GMs world wdie operations.
I have zero concerns about engine longevity

X2 well put...:guns:
Cobalt443 07-20-2006, 11:08 AM I craked my block, warped the head, and melted the number four piston on my first 2.4 with only 381 miles on it. The coolant hose was loose and as soon as I saw coolant coming from the exhaust, I wanted to let it go good so they wouldn't just pop another hose on and send me on my way

damn, when you break it... you BREAK the bitch
MikeSS 07-20-2006, 01:05 PM 48 000KM and zero engine problems. Actually, it seems to keep getting faster the more it gets broken in.

I feel the same thing. Mine has just under 9k miles on it and its running like a champ. The wifes car, we have had to take it in 3 times all for wrapped rotors. Thankfully the stealership has fixed them under warranty.

yep.....I had to be towed a 1/4 mile to the dealership.......She hung in there for quite awhile. My DIC wasn't displaying coolant temp and the motor wouldn't rev past 4k, I just drove it until basically it just stopped and smoke started pouring out from under the hood. I could see the dealership from where I was.....lol
Their on-site rental car place was closed at the time so they gave me a demo car off the lot

well thats a big change! what made you decide to get a 2.4 in the first place if you could afford an evo?!

lol, i don't know if i want to hang out with this kinda crew when i'm in jersey... if they break cars like THAT.
06G5GT 07-20-2006, 07:34 PM I guess I'm the only one not happy then. At about 1600kms, my 2.4 started making cold start noise that's identical to piston slap heard commonly on the GM V6 3100/3400 engines.
I took care in breaking this engine in and I've used nothing but premium fuel. So, I am just a little ticked. The Grand Am I traded in on this car had the piston slap as well and was the main reason I traded it.
It goes to the dealer Tuesday. If they don't do something about it, it's my last GM car ever.

and coming from someone that claims to have a White SS...they dont make a SS in white yet

I still don't get it. A little engine noise and its no good? I have never heard a 4 cly that sounds good at idle.
I have heard of piston slap on LS1s but nothing else.
2K5SS/SC? 07-20-2006, 08:50 PM A rocker arm let loose in my first engine and all hell broke loose from there. The second engine is great though. It runs like a champ!

it's a DOHC engine... where are the rocker arms located?
silentgarth 07-20-2006, 09:27 PM and coming from someone that claims to have a White SS...they dont make a SS in white yet
I was at my dealership today having some brake work done. And saw 2 white ss 2.4L. Granted they were the sedan model but none the less...
and coming from someone that claims to have a White SS...they dont make a SS in white yet
Hmm, my coworker just bought a white SS 2.4L.

its a common misconception that OHC and DOHC engine have no rocker arms. Many do

The "piston slap" he speaks of is probably just a lifter......

Yes they do. I have a White SS 2.4. They don't make a White SS/SC, which is a damn shame.
SuperSweet SS 07-20-2006, 10:12 PM ok ok sorry...thought is was just the LS and others...I know they dont in the SS/SC...
joeworkstoohard 07-20-2006, 10:51 PM its a common misconception that OHC and DOHC engine have no rocker arms. Many do
never saw anything that looks like a rocker arm to me in the exploded view of the 2.4. i'm asking a serious question, the only DOHC heads i ever had apart were on toyota 4A-GEs and 4A-FEs
Cobalt443 07-21-2006, 11:55 AM lol, i don't know if i want to hang out with this kinda crew when i'm in jersey... if they break cars like THAT.

ideally, neither will i. i drive like a little old lady on the way home from costco.
i really do need to get back to the northern states, lol. so, have you got any hot chickies in your group? hopefully some with low standards?
SSCobalt~SSZ24 07-21-2006, 04:01 PM the quad 4 after 1999 is a good engine i have had 2 both with superchargers on them (stock internals) and had no problem stop bashing the quads man! the 2.3L quad sucked though lol

LOL....I'm usually the only female surrounded by one big sausage party. I got my sis to come to the last one but we are both happily engaged. Donna attended one time but she is also happily involved I believe....

The 2.2 Ecotec in our base sedan makes "a little engine noise."
My 2.4, if it is indeed piston slap, basically has it's pistons bouncing around inside the cylinders wearing the linings prematurely.
Piston slap is common on a few GM engines and there is a class action lawsuit going on right now to fix them. GM's response is that if it isn't burning a litre of oil every 1000k then it's acceptable.
06G5GT 07-21-2006, 04:09 PM The "piston slap" he speaks of is probably just a lifter......
Between 15 years of owning GM cars and 7 years working in a garage, I'm pretty sure I know piston slap when I hear it.

Piston slap is not as bad as you think is is. My LS1 has a little piston slap when she first starts up. No oil usage problems though.
The reason is the short skirt design of the head, plus the fact that is is aluminum on aluminum so they have to leave a little room for expansion. After 2004 GM switched to a longer skirt design on their small-blocks. Reliability was never affected by piston-slap, it's just annoying sometimes.
"Piston Slap" as you are describing it is not a continous problem only on start up of the motor. Those sound's are most likely a bad lifter or something else
c0al67 07-21-2006, 05:11 PM if the 2.4 is anywhere near as good as the 3.8 v6 in my 96 berreta then im not worried. it was my first car, i bought a new one when i was 18 but kept the berreta. still have it. 233k miles and still starts and runs smoothly.

i thought berettas were 3.1 litre V6s...
anyways, i've generally found GM engines to last a long time.
g5mike 07-22-2006, 09:58 PM no problems, except for some interior rattles, time will tell how good the car really is.
Dragonsfire12345 07-22-2006, 10:09 PM mine runs like a pure breed champion. Also when I took off my valve cover to paint it I saw the roller rockers Man O man does a new motor look clean on the inside lol
mike25 07-23-2006, 11:05 AM i dont knw where you are getting your problems from....ive yet to have any problems(knock on wood)....besides some minor creaking/craking from inside the car...but i mostly blme that on my listening to musc up real loud and the bass coming from the sub....i mean it cold also be that fact tha i ordered my car and it came straight to me from the factory on a transport...so i dunno but im hpy with mie and i dont think ou car will have many reliabilit issues...im at 3400 miles and shes holdin strong...lol...
