Clear Coat
Clear Coat
Hey guys, I was wiping down my car today and noticed that there was a scratch that appeared to be a simple white scratch cuz it wasnt deep enough to feel. So I do what I always do when i notice something like this; which is to get out the buffer and try and buff it out with some compound. Needless to it didnt come out. I noticed the paint looked a little faded where i had just buffed for a quick minute and figured it was just some compound residue left or the wax had gotten stripped off. I try and clean it but nothing, try to wax it and nothing. Only thing i can think of is that the buffer took the clear coat off. I have never had this happen to any of my cars. The clear coat must be pretty shitty or there is only like 1 coat instead of several. Anyone know how to go about fixing this myself. I know i can have my painter fix it but i dont want to pay a fortune for it. Also do you think the dealership will fix it if i complain enough about it?

Well good news. I called the dealership today and talked to the salesman that sold me the car and he said that he will take care of it for me and that there will be no charge to fix it.
Well here is an update to this problem. I went to the dealership this morning. My sales rep had the day off today so I had to deal with some other guy and says my sales rep will follow up with me tomarrow as to how it went today. This guy claimed that the damage couldn't have been done with a buffer and that I must have hit something or someone hit me. I looked at the guy and was like how do you figure. He says because there are some chips in the paint now and a scratch in the paint that it must have been hit. I then go into how does something hitting the car take the clear coat off. Of course he didnt have an answer to that and moved into what I was using when I was buffing the car. I told him umm.... A BUFFER and WAX. He then goes into what type of buffer it was. I dont know the exact brand so I told him I dont know that its just a regular buffer. He then wraps up the conversation and states that I caused the damage somehow other than a buffer and that it wasnt a factory defect even tho the rest of the car is fine except for one small area on my drivers door and that I would have to pay to fix it. Now I'm pissed and decided to drive over to my painter. My painted says that to fix it right so that you wouldnt be able to notice the difference in the paint color he would have to repaint the entire driverside door and part of the rear quarter. He must have figured that It was going to be more than what I wanted to pay for it because he didnt give me a estimate which he usually would. We start talking and I go over what happened and he looks at it some more and says that it may not be down all the way to the paint and that he may be able to use something to buff it to make it a shine more for a show I am going to on saturday. Needless to say when my sales rep calls for the follow up tomarrow I am going to go off on him like no tomarrow and see what he has to say and do to keep me coming back. If he isnt going to do anything for me I'll be taking my car to a different dealership from now on to do work on it.

Yea you should have told him you were using a mothers buffer. It's like a orbital sander, real nice to have and nearly impossible to burn the paint. If you picked up color on the pad yes, it's your fault. YOu shoudl have used that argument.
Sadly I bet you'll have to wetsand the piece down to get the shine back. Worse comes to worse you'll sand down to the base coat. Then it's a given you'll need that part resprayed.
Ya paint on these cars = crap. Ive already had two spots on mine peel away. My dealer tried to say a rock hit it or something, and im like how can a rock make the paint peel back? Obviously they didnt have an answer. I re painted it and used polishing compound and it looks pretty good. Also for small scratches i found this product by turtle wax called the chip stick or something, you fill in the scratch or chip with this little stick of wax they give you then buff it out with a color based wax ( which color depends on the color of your car) and the wipe away. It works pretty well for the 6 bucks it costs.
Well just wanted to let everyone know my baby looks almost new again. My painter did an amazing job. It turns out that i didnt go thru all of the clear and he was able to save it. He even fixed a scatch in the area and touched up the chips for no extra cost. The only thing that is noticable are the chips but you have to get really close to tell. $50 well spent compared to what the dealership would've charged.
i was cleaning the inside of the door jams of my car with meguiars cleaner/wax and when i looked at my pad i relized i had some paint on my pad. I wasn't even wiping hard just softly to get some of the dirt out of the jam. I don't think there is even clear coat in the door jams or anywhere in the inner portion of the car.
