Governor
SS/SC has no govenor. I think it might be drag limited though. I had mine at 140 mph and a little bit but thats because of the factory Z rated tires. The LS and Sedan's have governors. Not sure what at though.

Make sure you have Z rated tires. I have W rated tires on my SS/SC. I have a call into the GM customer care center about it.
W rated is up to 168 mph so I wouldn't worry to much but it's still not Z rated.

When "ZR" appears in the size designation with the service description, the maximum speed is as indicated by the service description.
Tire Designation Maximum Speed
P275/40ZR17 93W 270 km/h (168 mph)
P275/40ZR17 93Y 300 km/h (186 mph)

The SS has no actual speed limiter, its top speed is just limited by aerodynamic drag on the car. I believe the fastest the car car possibly go is 144MPH, after that it can't overcome the wind resistance. Not sure what the top speed is gearing wise, I'd imagine its something like 165MPH
not only aerodynamics but also power, the car wont have enough power to push it through the wind there for being limited drag coeficient of 146mph. add some more power adders then look at 150+

The stock tires are Pirelli Pzero Rosso. If you look on the sidewall, they should be 215/45 R18TL 93W... The W is a 168mh speed rating. W implies 168mph, Y implies 186mph. Z applies to all tires 149mph and over. So your W rated tires are also Z rated, but they're BETTER than just Z rated. manufacturers are sometimes loose about whether they print ZR or just R. Hope that makes sense.
This was taken from Pirelli's website:
Speed category "ZR" - Designed for fitment to vehicles with a speed capability over 149 mp/h (240 km/h)
Speed symbol "W" - Designed for fitment to vehicles having speed capability not exceeding 168 mp/h (270 km/h)
ZR + Speed symbol "W" - Only for a transitional period. Tires will be marked with both designations for fitment to vehicles with speed capability over 149 mp/h (240 km/h but not exceeding 168 mp/h (270 km/h)
Ie, don't be worried that you don't see the Z on them. Z+W is the same thing as W.
Don't change 'em. W rated is what you want. Not that you're gonna be going over 149mph anyway.
I'm pretty sure the cobalt ss can go over 150 mph. The cobalt is based on the european astra, and the last gen astra coupe 2.0 ecotec turbo is famous for being the cheapest car available to top 150mph, and it would actually go 2 mph over that. So I'm pretty sure the supercharged 2.0 ecotec new cobalt can do the same. The max speed would gain a lot if you remove the huge air blocking wing on the back.
108 mph on the 2.2 ecotec is so pathetic.
AFAIK, Opels that use the 2.2 ecotec such as Astra Coupe and Vectra (German version of Malibu) can top at least 135 mph. Or else it wouldn't be able to keep up on the Autobahn.
I thought speed limiters are only 155 mph and I think are stupid. But 108 is really unresonable and very dangerous on motorways and Autobahn. Also, Like what's the point of having a 2.2 instead of a 1.6, if they both top at 108.

I agree 100% i topped out my 2.2 about a week ago, I know its stupid but I was really disappointed to see that needle just drop at 5000 rpms. I know it's no SS but it was still moving pretty good at 108, it had some more.
I want to stop ranting, but what's the point of paying over $10000 buying a new car if it only goes to 170kph/ 108mph. You can buy most any used car for $1000 and go faster than that!!
I know GM is good by dumbing down the quality of Opel and selling them as Chevrolets so we can buy them cheaper. But I don't agree with dumbing down the speed so drastically. Especially when it has a healthy 145bhp and doesn't have very good economy, it's not worth it if it can only do 108mph.

Some body out there must figure out a way or make a chip to eliminate the 108 mph limiter!! Since this car is so popular and has such a good website, I think it won't be long before someone find a way to crack it.
The first time I discovered the engine cut off on my LS coupe I was going back and forth with an early 2000s V6 Accord, I was hoping to put some distance between him and I once he got held up behind some soccer mom, but he caught right back up once I started holding around 100. All of you are right, there is a ton of juice left at that point...acceleration from 90-100 is so quick that 115 or 120 wouldnt take much longer.
108?? what model do you have??
my coupe hits 120 like it's its job!!!
and as far as everyone that hits the 'govener', before it drops the rpms, dont floor it, try and see if you can keep it going without making it hit the rev limiter

my base sedan also cuts out at about 108 but my mom's ls sport sedan keeps going until 120. her speedometer goes up to 140 though......maybe it is because her pirelli (sp) tires are rated at a higher speed?
That's what I'm thinking. I would bet that those of you with the sport appearance package and upgraded wheels/tires will be able to go to 120 and those with base model and the standard 15 inch wheels are locked at 108.
Cany anyone confirm?
