I got my LS Coupe 5spd up to 114 and had to back off because I came up on traffic, but she still had more in her.
108? 120?
where do u guys take ur cars to run that fast legally anyways...
I open mine up on the Autostrada in Italy.

Whatever the difference is, I would really like to know, I have an ls but no 1sb package because I knew I'd be replacing the rims within days and I really don't like the white gauges, just pref, the foglights weren't high on my list either because I was thinking about replacing the plastic vents with mesh.
What a stupid thing to bother me, I will never have my car past 100mph again, but just knowing some ls's have a higher top speed than mine will drive me nuts, I may even lose sleep over this..........lol

The non-1sb, non-SS cars are limited because the crappy tires they ship on them will blow up above 112 mph (Well, they might not blow up, but they're not supposed to be run above 112). Its a CYA thing.

you're right, but most cars dont actually restrict that, lets say you get better tires and want to race it on a track, then your screwed

I just read car and driver yesterday, and the LS top speed is 124 mph. Not that great but probably because of the high ground clearance, average aerodynamics and auto gearbox. But new cars are likely to get worse aero effieciency because the governments requirement for a high bonnet for pedestrial safety, meaning bigger frontal contact area. Even the Mazda 3 has a really poor 0.33 cd. All the new cars has that big and high frontal area, mazda 3, corolla, new focus, cobalt... These cars aren't going to be as aerodynamic as their predecessors.
I think that tyre speed limit is rubbish. 1970's maserati, lambo, ferrari goes above 160mph. No problem, and that was 70's technology (not crossply but not nearly as modern as today's low profile radials). And chevy said they spent time to choose a quality tyre for the cobalt. I remember continental is the tyre used for base cobalts and that's a german tyre country of autobahn. So no problem for high speed use. Those of you who only got 108 mph is probably a bad gearbox or the chip is set at 108 for those base models, because chevy want you to be damn slow because you didn't pay them enough. But if you fix it you are getting a good deal because you can't get a faster car for less money.
So anyone with this 108 limit should really go fix it at the dealer as soon as possible. Just say that my 145bhp 2.2 ecotec powered cobalt is being over taken by hyundais and kias.

My suspection is confirmed. The Cobalt definately has a worse aero cd figure than previous models. Cobalt's euro cousin Astra needs the 170bhp 2.0 turbo to achieve only 2 mph above what the last gen Astra coupe 147bhp 2.2 ecotec's 134mph.
So we shouldn't really complain about the 124 mph of the new less aero model, since the europeans buy the Astra for thrice the price of the cobalt.

So no more blaming on the tyre, C&D said it's drag limited. You could probably get 130 mph if you lower the car and in a manual car. 130 mph is what the corolla XRS 180bhp vttL-i gets. Saying that the tyre's preventing you to tip over 108mph is as silly as it's gonna get.

Thats what bothers me, I don't drive a base model, its an ls... Only real diff between my car and 1sb is white gauges, it came with 15" rims instead of 16", exhaust tip and fog lights.... all of which I had no need or desire for as I was replacing or content with all... but they forgot to mention one thing...."oh yea if u dont spend the extra $300.00 we are going to limit your car to 108mph" .... yea thanks

nice find!
i bet i can break 130
i forget my speed rating on my tires is 130, so i wont go farther, if possible
althought i really dont like to speed
Tiny, we all hope you can get 130 if you have the chance. We depend on you to proof that the cobalt is faster than other cars in its class.
Although the 2.2 auto's 0-60 time is 8.4 sec, the manual could be even quicker than the class leading corolla's 8.1 sec, which is a far cry from the civic's 10+ sec time. Top speed 124 already beats corolla but not focus.

I dunno, i just think it sucks, cause the road i use on the way to work is like the autobahn. when you pass people, you go fast. and when you are going fast, everyone else goes faster....
my 75hp accord topped at 120, I dont see how a car with twice the power is going to be beaten like that. I really hope theres a way to get this straight.

I just got a cobalt and that goviner is kicking my ass is there anything to do about it

If the LS were designed to go much faster than 120, it probably would. Thus I would assume that Chevy isn't making the LS with the intention of racing.
And the SS/SC is drag limited, the Base, LS and LT are all governed. How do I know, cause Chevy told me so.

i understand, but i dont think they should limit it before the tire ratings
oh well, i shoulda bought a faster car
what about the stage 5 cars, they trap 115ish, what are they gonna do about it?
I have also heard/read that the SS/SC is drag limited to 143. Has anyone had the chance to test this ?!? . I had mine up to about 140 (220kph) and it felt like it had a lot more.
Anyone live close to a superspeedway where you can but hot laps with your own car ?

I personaly had her up to 145. Factors may include slight tail wind, elevation, and a slight downward slope at times. I know she can go faster, its in her, but wind resistance is a problem
108 mph governor easily bypassed
Hi, first thing i want to say is that i am french Canadian so my english is average...lol
I had ordered an ls coupe with the sport package, 16' wheels, ebony interior etc... Dealer calls me back and tells me i will have to wait 6-8 weeks to have this exact car but he can deliver me one with 15's within a week. I said i want 16' so he made me choose 16' from their aftermarket selection for the same price and got my car on may 3rd. But when i tried the car, my top speed was 107 mph or 170 kph!!! I was very sad and complained to my dealer that they are supposed to reach over 120 mph (124 mph Car and Driver) and if i knew that the car was governed to 107 mph, i would have waited 6-8 weeks. So i met the guy they call ''The Magician'' who is the electronic guru in the dealer service center. I was the first test he did for the Cobalt and the only thing he did was to change the program in the car computer by switching the tire size from 15's to 16's and it worked!!! It took him 20 minutes and all the staff was very happy with the result. I have reached 190 kph, about 120 mph and i did not touch the governor again. I have to try it back again because i was with my girlfriend and she is pregnant and... So just go to the dealer and ask them to flash the car programmation. I have 205-55HR16 tires, maybe with the crappy base tires, they won't do it but try and play safe.
PS: i love my car so far, it's very fast for a base engine, can't wait to see numbers for the 2.4 SS.

Be it error on the speedo, so be it, but the guy I work for, his SS hit 145 without fear. And it felt like there was more left. Regardless, it was messy drawers time for me. The way the SS sits, it feels like you're a bullet fired out of a gun! Very impressed with that car!
As for my base Cobalt... 108mph comes too soon!
blah.
