A flash is an update to firmware. I think that link has a good explaination. Check out the link there to flash memory, which can be "reprogrammed."

The answer to the first posts is yes you can get your own flash. There are a few programs such as hp tuners; however, most members would warn you not to mess with that stuff unless you are sure what you are doing.

In the case of kits such as Intense provides, they will give you your own binary file that can be used to flash your system using your device such as the above mentioned.

If you understand what the flash changes and why these changes take place, it is just as easy to do your own flash with such a program. It is a lot like working on any computer. You have never had to flash a bios before on your PC?

NO WAY!

you cannot just slap a tune on your car that was designed for larger injectors and a smaller pulley and expect to see more power. it does not work that way. you can have your car custom tuned and squeeze a little bit more performance out of the stock setup. regardless, you could not "just get a stage 2 flash" without buying the kit.

to answer your question random:
"flashing" the ecu is loading a custom tune on to your cars computer. the dealer updates your ecu when you go in for the stage 2 install in order to compensate for more fuel and a smaller pulley. other methods involve using software with the aid of somebody that is experienced in tuning to aheive better performance.

... in all honesty, i would hope that if you are having a stage kit installed that you at least know what is in it!

I'm just curious how is it not relevant? I'm not debating the issue, but I would like to understand why. He asked what exactly a flash was. The basic idea is the same as far as I understand. In fact, both would even be directed toward the core operating parameters.
I was assuming he meant he wanted to flash his car with his own upgrades, not just on a standard configuration.

Yea i know of HPTuners and Intense and all that stuff but i was just wondering if there was a way to trick the dealer into letting you get a stage 2 reflash

I have Larger injectors 42Lbs a hour lucas and a 2.85 Pulley with the Injen CAI. runs great except for the car running rich, so in the mean time i was trying to connn the dealer into a stage 2 reflash

^Not going to happen. The dealer has no control over this. They have to call just to get the flash sent to them and without buying the kit they will not have the info they need to get the flash.

Now you could have some one with HPtuners that also has the stage 2 kit copy theres and reflash yours but both of you can get in truble if GM ever found out.

And if the dealer ever dose any updates on your ECU it will be gone agen and you would have to do it all over agen.

later

flashing a bios (or updating any firmware) is the same concept. however, comparing car tuning and flashing a bios does not really help in this situation and it seemed you were being very condecending.

nothing personal. just my thoughts at the time.

edit: oh, and even if you actually 'could' get a stage 2 reflash you wouldnt want it. pig rich and a custom tune would be better.
