Red face Sweet SS! so..GM Stage kits or Aftermarket?

JUST GOT YOUR SS AND LOOKING TO GAIN SOME SERIOUS HP? HOPEFULLY THIS THREAD WILL HELP
Wuddup!
Got my sweet 05 yellow cobalt ss s/c last weekend and im loving every single inch of it. Only thing that aint so cool is the first gear wheel hop!! yeah you know what im talking about! i just ordered the Ingalls stiffy torque damper to lessen the wheel hop.

So im gonna bring up a topic, which i think is important. Dont get me wrong the SS is more than what i imagined but i need more horsepower!!! so after reviewing all type of mods i could do ive grilled down my decisions to two options.

First
Go with the GM stage kit 2 which is msrp $709.28 on GM Direct.com and gain roughly 40+ horsepower and not void the warranty.

OR

Second
Go with a after market stage kit, such as Intense's stage kit 3 with roughly about 50+horsepower gain for just a little under $600.
or
Going for a 2.8" pulley system, belt, tensioner, bigger injectors kit, and a pcm flash for just about $700, which after doing some research would get me a 60+ horepower gain.

I'm not stating guys, just letting you know what I think so let me know now what you think I should do.

GM stage 2 with a 2.8 PB pully an intake and catt back.

Send the ingals back, and get trans mounts from Intense. (Saves you 50+ dollers nad works about 100X beter)

And then get an uper motor mount, some CABs, and HPtuners and enjoy the power that you can actualy put to the ground!

I have ZZP Engine Motor mount along with Intense Transaxle Mount( actually got them today)

Im hoping this will eliminate my wheel hop.

2.7 42# injectors Cobalt Addiction tune seems to be a good way to go now a days too.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON GM's TUNE! It sucks, the royally screwed up the tune on that car. Buy your pulley, injectors, belt, and HPTUNERS. You will get all of the "benifit" of the stage tunes, plus it will cost less, and you have control over what your car is doing. Also, if you get HP Tuners you can change the boost in 1st gear so as to eliminate wheel hop with out any other mod! ENJOY!

Good choice by getting rid of wheel hop first. That's the route I took. I would get the transmission mounts and control arm bushings as well. Once you've got wheel hop out of the way then you can move onto adding some power. I spent a lot of time at the track in my SS/SC when it was stock...I think that was more valuable than anything else. Learning how *your* car runs, responds to different launching techniques, shifting techniques, etc. will help make the most of any power mods you do. Heck I ran what is in my sig with only a 3.0" pulley and K&N CAI for go fast goodies.

On top of that, I would invest in HPT software and learn to tune your own car...believe me, it is entirely worth it.

I am not saying that they are not better than stock, but if you open up there tune in HPT you can see things that they did incorrectly, that can be changed to make it even better! I am not bangin on you or anyone else that purchased Stg II, just making a statement.

i agree there is alot of room for improvment, if you have hpt tuners, dont get the stage kits just parts & make a nice custom killer tune
i will be tuning over my stage 2 flash to unlock all of the comps secrets

Not only are they not crap ... they maintain your warranty (although I realize that this particular issue has come under a LOT of scrutiny). For those of use who use our Cobalts as daily drivers year round yet enjoy modifiying our cars, the stage kits are great.

Very good point! Thanks

I'm sure there will be a GM stage 3 kit too.

GREAT REPLIES!

a custom tune is always going to be better than a general tune that has to accomodate every car out there....

I suggest selling the car and getting something else. Thats at least what I intend to do. There are far better cars out there to modify and get much larger power gains out of.

I'm NOT saying this to be a dick, or to diss the cobalts' performance. I am nothing but overly satisfied with the car and its capabilities, just at this point, I want RWD, and more power without having to do a motor teardown...
