Cool Muffler question

A friend of mine and I were arguing over my muffler, I was talking about doing my exhaust and a header and he said just do a header and cut the muffler and put on one of those tin can things from auto zone, I know with a header you can gain performance, but I thought removing the muffler just made it louder, and if a gain in horsepower only like 2-3 not much, not worth it to remove, might as well jsut replace the whole exhaust, and I know either catless or a high flow cat helps!! but wont that throw a code, and with no back pressure wint I loose torque? I was fighting with him on this, lol

someone help me out. Im confused becuase he was sooo sure of himself it confused me. lol my mian question is removing the muffler give you a gain in power? or is it just the noise thats kool? lol

I just swapped mine out. The existing piping is mostly 2.5" anyway. I see no point changing the entire exhaust for the same size. The stock muffler is the cork, so I pulled it.

Not technically. It will give you SOME power and noise but not the full benefit of having a catback. Yes the SS pipe is 2.5" back but some places it gets crushed down a bit and causes a "speed bump" in the exhaust flow. The stock system is also crush bent so the pipe shape is distrorted around turns and such.

A full catback is mandrel bent and sometimes"tuned" for the car. You'll see more gains from a catback

Also HighFlow cats WILL NOT throw a code, but catless will...obviously

just to show how crappy the muffler is, they use the same muffler on the ls, lt, ss, and ss/sc, i put them side by side, they are exactly the same except the inlet and outlet on the ss/sc is bigger, i was like wtf is this bs

Don't waste your money on a catback. Just get a good muffler such as Magnaflow or Dynomax.

Then why do people get the GMPP catback? It is 2 1/4" piping. The muffler is a cork. Piping is piping. 1 crimp over the axle doesn't hinder the stock setup to the point of replacing the entire exhaust.

Modern Performance has done dyno's before and after and all that is gained from a catback is a few HP....which comes mainly from replacing the muffler.
