Restrictions on running nitrous at the track?

Hey there,

I plan on going to nitrous soon, but before then I had a few questions. I did a search and nothing came up so...here it goes.

When running nitrous at a track, what will the inspectors check for before you run. What do you need kit wise and such to be able to run nitrous at a track? If I can remember somewhere, you had to have a safety shut off thingy or something of the sorts. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks

So would you suggest the wet nitrous system from Zex + the Racer's Tuning Kit + the Traction Control Window Switch? That would include everything I need and I wouldn't be wasting money?

you need a blowdown tube, you need to have your bottle mounted securely and at some tracks apparently you need a fire resistant jacket.

the 06 NHRA rule book states you have to wear a SFI approved driving coat and SFI apporoved gloves. but most tracks ive been too didnt say anything with my cobalt or my camaro and i spray a 300 shot through my camaro. according to the rule book you only have to have a blowdown tube if the bottle is in your passenger compartment, the trunk is not your passenger compartment. i got into a yelling match with some safety tech at one of the tracks here about having a blow down tube, i finaly caved and bought one and just tossed it on. but in the rule book your all good if you have the bottle in your trunk.

bingo

honestly, call the local track, some have their own supplemental set of rules that they will tack on, and some are pretty laid back about things (not to the point where it's dangerous though hopefully).

I run spray on my F-body all the time at the track. Blowdown, competently done N20 plumbing and a safe and secure bottle install and you are good at both IHRA and NHRA sanctioned tracks. ( at least in my experience)

Oh- and if you're bottle's behind a locked door (under the hatch or in the trunk) a lot of tech
guys want a tethered key in the lock, as one inspector said, " in an emergency would you rather we opened the hatch with your key or this fire axe?"

At my track I beleive they said the nitrous lines could not be run through the passenger compartment, they had to be routed on the underside of the car, don't quote me though

Almost nothing is required if you have the bottle mounted in the trunk.

Expecially if you are just going to T&T days. Sanctioned events are a little different.

it connects to the bottle blow off valve and vents the nitrous outside of the vehical in case the bottle pressure gets too high, this way you won't get stoned off of the laughing gas like in the movie Black Sheep . lol:

at the track i run at close to here, tech looked under my hood, then asked where the bottle was mounted, since it was in the trunk, he marked a huge "N" and arrow pointing to my trunk (which i scraped off soon after) and off i went. no jacket, no gloves...just a helmet and thats it.

I went to the track and they didnt ask about anything. I ran, purged my kit and everything and not once did i get recalled to the tech. I didnt wear a jacket or a helmet, I have no blow down tube, not even a pressure gauge.

My tech was just really laid back I suppose.

Oh wait, I do have a blowdown tube. its sitting on my back seat.. lol
