View Full Version : Car won't start after HPT flash

I just made revisions to my first tune (didn't change much, just RPM limter, Top speed and boost in 1st gear). And the stupid thing won't start. It has the Security Light on the bottom.

Went ahead and performed the Security relearn twice (as posted per spec in the help guides), pulled the negative off the battery and flashed back to stock tune. The car will not start. Any suggestions? It's aggravating.

P.S The "Power Steering" , "Low Fuel" & "Auto Lights off" keep flashing, I shut the lights off as it states in the guide.

are you sure u didnt use "Write entire" when you flashed. If you did, theres a chance your PCM is fried.

you might have changed the vin if you used another tune and did a write entire... try to reconnect and hopefully you have a full read saved... then you can reflash and all should be good... trust me... I did that the first time I used HPT myself... I was freaked for about an hour til I figured out what I did

The lights flashing is normal. Mine does it everytime I rewrite a tune. But like Ljavy said, it is possible the PCM fried. Did you oped a door or turn on a light or do anything while it was writing the flash? And when you do a write entire it has a much greater chance of having problems.

It failed half way thru the first flash. That was just doing the write calibration. I tried the write calibration and it stated it was erasing entire VCM and re-writing and that failed too. It said "recovered" when doing the write calibration only again and took the flash and said it was complete. I saved the original full stock tune and reloaded it on the car and it took it but then it won't start now. It's got the security light of death. if the PCM was fried it would not doing anything period. PCM won't even accept the tune so I know that ain't it.

Did you look around on the HPT forum? It looks like some guys have had problems with writes failing and the PCM going into recovery mode. Some guys have needed to write entire after a problem like that.

I wrote a post on HPT a few hours ago and just got replies. I gave him the info and we will go from there.

yah, it's dumb. If my PCM is supposedly "Fried" I suppose I can order one since it's just sitting in storage anyways. It wasn't like I was re-engineering the car, I just moved the rev limiter to 7k, limited boost in first gear and set top speed to 160 rather then 158 (not like I am EVER going to go that fast but was putzing around and this happens..

my understanding is the E40 pcm isnt really fryable, generally you just do a write entire & you should be good to go. In fact there are some of the new PCM's that you currently can't do a write calibration only to for some reason.

If your "write entire" fails, check your battery connections and volts. I ran into a situation like this once before when my battery died.

However, since upgrading to 2.1.14 i'm unable to do any "quick flash", only write entires...

Battery is fine, all works but when turning over it clicks.

i've been talking with Keith and a moderator on the forum. I think the problem eludes them. All fuses are ok and snug in the box, that's not the problem. Battery has full charge, also not the problem, I'm going to try a different laptop this weekend because on my dell laptop it keeps timing out doing a write entire (erasing the VCM and putting a new one on). Going to use my Toshiba laptop.

Also, if this doesn't work I will be towing my car out of storage come spring in shame to the dealer again. I've had nothing but problems with this car from day one. It's like it's fighting me not to mod it, drive it or let it sit for that matter.

If it is the same thing that happened with my Grand Am after a while, go, and stick the key to the "ON" Position, let it sit for 10 minutes and the Security light will go off. Then, turn the key to the Off, and then start the car. That worked with my Grand Am when it did that, so, hopefully, since it is part of the GM Security System (PassLock II or something along those lines) it should work because that recodes the starter to match your key.

I really wish it was that easy. I've already done that. The security light never goes away.

Ohh.. I wish I could help. I remember how long I searched when my car did that for an answer. I hope everything works out though.

Will the dealership look at it?

Will the dealership look at it?

The car sits about an hour north of my normal dealer. I will take it only there. I can get it towed but I can say with certainty that 99% my car will get scrwed by the tow truck. taking it to dealer is last option if I cannot figure it out.

Update: I got the car running, a write entire was needed but the problem followed me when I tried to tune another members car, we had another set of cables to see if that was the problem that interface from the laptop to the little hp tuners box, and a cable from that to the ODBII Port but swapping cables didn't help, neither did my other laptop. I think I have a defective tuning box. It works when IT wants to.

me too :) even though it's in storage it makes me sad when I can't even start it. With the weather being so mild up here I am about ready to pull it out of storage. We haven't had any snow at all!
