Thinking of Buying COBALT SS S/C
Thinking of Buying COBALT SS S/C
What do you guys think? It will be my first car I have been saving up for a car ever since I can remember.. I am thinking of getting arival blue. I just would like your oppinions!
Thanks guys
Thanks guys
BUY IT! Especially if they have the GM employee pricing. I got mine for 18 and some change. It might not be as fast as an SRT4 (which by the way was the car I wanted) but that's why you have aftermarket...well....soon there will be an aftermarket for us (hopfeully) lol
ordering now you probably won't get Arrival Blue either, as of a couple weeks ago people were saying they were told new orders wouldn't arrive untill around christmas for ss/sc's. I've heard September for those that ordered early, maybe you should consider if you realy "need" the sc possibly think about the 2.4ss as they are shipping.
Someone remind me to call my dealer on mnday to see what's up with my order, maybe it's made some progress.

So, please tell me what I'm doing wrong.
What you should honestly do is get a cheap car to learn how to drive in. Its what I did, I bought a 4 cylinder 1984 Fiero 4 speed manual for $1,500. I drove it until July 11th of this year - on my 18th birthday I got a Cobalt SS.
The Cobalt SS is way too powerful for someone new and inexperienced to the road. I'm not trying to offend you or anything, I'm sure you're a good driver, you're just not experienced. I am thankful my parents did not allow me to buy a car like this when I was younger, I would not be here today.
Also, you should get an insurance quote before you even think about buying a car. I don't know if you plan on getting a job but I know for a fact that insurance on a sports car for a 16 year old is going to be at least $1,500 every 6 months. A lot of 16 year olds don't even make that much in a year, I know I didn't.
Maintenance is also something to think about. Are you going to buy the extended "wear'n'tear" warranty? If not, can you afford to fix it something if it goes wrong? What about tires, you know they cost $219 a piece?
Also you should know that this car REQUIRES at least 91 grade fuel to function 'normally' without power loss. That's a few extra pennies.....
Not trying to destory your hope of owning a Cobalt SS, but there is more to a car then just buying one.

Couldnt agree more with you. I thought I was a pro driver the day i got my licence then quickly realized I wasnt after I nearly avoided what could have been a serious accident. After that, I went home changed my underwear and drove like a grandmother for the next couple months.
Sorry, they offered so i took their offer. I do pay for gas but they pay for the insurance well half of it. If I were on my own, i'd prboably wouldnt even have a car making 7 an hour. However, i'm thankful that my parents have bought this car for me because it's a great car. And I will agree that when your 16 and 17 and even 18 u do stupid stuff.
Hey,
Theres no way that you could be 16 and afford this car. Its a real bad idea. Im 23 yrs old, recently graduated college, in my first career job, and just bought my metallic silver ss/sc. Trust me this car will be a handful. If you do have the money to purchase it, you have to figure in a bunch of other factors....being car insurance, maitience, more maitence(tires), plus ur a new driver at the age of 16 equals cops on your ass like theres no tomrrow. Not to bring ya down pal, but u will definitly mack this car up. Since your such a new driver, its just a matter of time before you get into your first accident. Trust me I was 16 at one time with a 77 Nova with 400ci small block. I was speed crazy and loved to light the tires up and attact a ton of cops. Plus I had my share of first time driving fender benders. Trust me you will do the same too. This car may be too much for you first car. My suggestion, get your self beater project car for the next couple of years, wait untill you graduate highschool or go to college then look into buy one. It's for your own good. Im not knocking you at all for you enthusiasm and interest in the SS. But My personal opinion is that it;s not for you just YET!!! Give yourself a couple of years. Just to give you an example of how much work is in this car....my buddy has one too, and we were both cruising and he hit a mega pot hole in NYC.....destroyed the rim and tire, and spent $800 to replace it....ouch.
Just wait a few years pal....plus you never know where the Cobalt SS will be in a few years.
Thanks

As a general breakdown:
- Insurance was $230/month and I'm a fully licensed G driver with 0 infractions with 7 years experience (at least look into this before buying the car if nothing else I'm sure you'll be surprised)
- 91 octane at ~$1.10 / litre * 51 litre tank and it's not going to get any better
- Maintenance costs (people have already given you a good idea on this one) especially your synthetic oil changes (better have about $100 every 3 months saved up)
- Driving in Canada you're going to want to buy snow tires and rims unless you want to take a chance your $800 rims get damaged by sand and salt
- Following the GM maintenance schedule which is a bi-yearly run over will be more expensive on the SS than a non-SS model
I guess being 16 you don't have to take bills, rent, insurance and I'm sure the maintenance costs into account so by all means, if you think you're ready for the horsepower behind the car go for it. Don't be surprised when you're getting pulled over every block and getting speeding tickets or some other infraction left and right because the cops are just going to love picking on you. I was 16 once and I know how I could be even being a responsible driver...and I only had 115hp in my Cavalier...not a S/C 205hp Cobalt. As long as you realise it's not a formula 1 car and the streets are not your personal race track hopefully you don't get yourself into any trouble with it.
I'll leave it at that and hopefully it gives you something to think about. I'm not going to complain if your parents want to buy you the car and cover all your expenses...I just don't think it gives you an accurate idea of what owning a new car (especially a "performance" car) is all about.
