Rear window tint

Just got my windows tinted, 35 all the way around plus 40% on the front windshield and 5% on the sunroof. Car looks awesome except one thing. When I picked it up the top of the back window (about 6") was not tinted. It is up where the black dots come down from the top of the window. I questioned the shop and they said he didn't do it because the tint wont stick. He told me to take it for a couple days and look at it and think about it. If I don't like it bring it back and he will re-tint the back. The only reason I didn't call totall BS is because my moms VW has the same bubbles and her tint does come off. Are any of you guys having trouble with your tint coming off at the top of your back window??? Let me know and how long you have had it done because I don't really think I like the way it looks but don't really want to have it redone every few months. Thanks alot.

I can get some pics if you guys don't understand exactly what i mean.

The dots are called Dot Matrix. The tint WILL NOT stick to the dots. I know, because I had it on the Cobalt, then it really looked like ****, so I told them to put VINYL over them. You can not see through vinyl, but it looks alot better than before. Even the vinyl doesn't not stick in certain places.

BS.. I have it tinted in mine. they had to try a few times. but it does stick.

The place i took my girls car (cav) with dot matrix. took fine sand paper too them and said to leave the read defroster on whenever in the car. foras long as you remeber.

so we did for like 3 months. Tint looks good still.

So after i got mine done. i left the defroster on all the time and used a vynil squeegie to press on the tint every once in a while and it looks fine now too.

The guy that owns the local tint shop did my SS/SC personally. He didn't touch the dot-matrix. Said his tint wouldn't stick to it. I thought it might bother me... but honestly, you don't notice it after a few weeks.

IMHO it's alright b/c it lets some light into the rear... so your tint will look a little lighter to any cops that decide to get nosy.

I'll have to see what your's look likes, cause they couldn't do it on mine either.

Does anyone know the purpose of the dot matrix? Has anyone painted over the dot matrix on the inside of the window? Like with mine a black car just paint it black??? Just an idea.

Thumbs up

I had my 2007 Cobalt SS 2.4 windows tinted but I don’t know what the tint % darkness …
I told the tint man put the darkest tint that’s legal here in Fla. ,
And he DID and I like IT ,
it looks as dark as my ’97 Camaro which had the same black dots ,
the tint was installed by the same tint man 10 yrs ago , he had also said
that the tint might peel/bubble-up and if it does he will cut it OFF...
it did not peel/bubble-up in all that time ,,
so I’m hoping that the tint will last as long. ..haha…
as the photo shows , you can see what looks like a water bubble my '97 Camaro
also had this , it lasted 10 yrs. ...

Kind of thinking about doing that to my car. If you don't mind sharing, how much did the entire job set you back?

Tint shop i went too couldn't get the rear tint to stick on the dot matrix, so he just put VINYL over it as well. It still sticks pretty good, only a few small spots are noticable.

I personally would recommend vinyl, if you dont mind the slight limit to visibility outta the rear windshield.

Here's mine on my tC. This is the front windshield. No problems tinting mine.

Outside ( I know I have to wash my car )

Inside ( no bubbling or peeling.........6 months later )

if u tint over the dots u have a chance of the tint turning white or silver because air gets undernead because of those dots. i'm just waiting for it to warm up and i'mgonna spray paint it or buy some car model tint and just spray it i dont care if i cant see out of that part i just hate how the sun and light goes thru and lights up my car so my tint is basically pointless in some areas cuz u can see right thru it cuz of the stupid part on my back window.

The dots are for "uv proctection" because the back window goes over the passengers heads when they are sitting in the backseat.

A glass guy told me the dots were used as guides when making the windows. Who knows....I had mine tinted and they left the dots and I had vinyl put there some time later. True, you'll forget its there after awhile. I got the vinyl for free so I haven't complained about it not sticking to all the dots. There is a trick tinters can do, I found this out afterwards, they can use elmers glue (not the white stuff) over the dots and the tint sticks.

The trick the tint guy told me to do with mine was to let it air dry but not in direct sunlight. Try to keep it in the shade or in the garage. This way, the glue doesn't dry too quickly and cause the tint not to adhere to the window. I did that and there's no white spots or spaces in the dot matrix.

Personally, if you don't put something over the bubbles you could just get used to it looking like ass, or you could just get the vinyle. The shop that did mine put the Vinyle on for free and even let me know before hand that tint wouldn't go over the bubbles. It's solid black can't see **** through it Vinyle with 15% tint and it looks great. It doesn't affect visibility at all because it sits so high on the rear window. When you lok from the outside you cant even tell where the tint ends and the vinyle starts. Go with the Vinyle.
