Excessive crankcase noise on my LSJ
A few weeks ago as soon as it got cold I noticed that the engine was making alot of noise at idle, almost like valve tap, now that its warmed up it hasnt seemed to go away, I only have 3800 miles on the car and ive talked to some other LSJ owners and they didnt have this noise
It just doesnt sound like it did when i first got it, its like theres some type of friction in the valve cover

Happaned to my car, it is the timing chain tensioner that went bad which is really weak in these cars. Take it in as sonn as you since your timing chain you get destroyed since its hitting the top cover.
my 07' just like paul said has a timing chain tensioner problem, it will rattle/knock/tap sometimes at idle only when cold or really really hot, as soon as it gets off idle it goes away, its loud enough to get people in traffic to think its coming from their own cars). i attempted to bring mine to the dealer, and i got some ridiculous answer from the service manager. So i did get a paper from the service manager stating i did bring it in with some type of knock/tapping (possibly form timing chain/valvecover area), so until it breaks ill keep driving it. mine started at 1200 miles, and at almost 6000 now it still comes and goes. I have no mods except for a CAI, and i had cobalt-addicition tune it.
P.S. paul when ya plan on getting rid of that downpipe?

If it goes away when it heats up, I dont think its the timing chain tensioner, since the chain cant heat up. lol. im serious thought, Im thking your noise could be form the normal belt tensioner. ]

or could be lack of lubrication due to oil drain down, but from what he described to me it sounds like the same problem and it seems to be a little widespread, mines even starting to do it, but that could be because of the numerous 7400 rpm pulls I've done on it...
and Rob, as soon as my car goes in for the turbo.. you got first dibs on the D.P. man.
(has extra bung for wide band too)

It wasnt knock trust me, it was def timing chain noise, its a very destinctive sound
The dealership was very prompt and did the oil change as well as fixing it under warranty in under 30 min for everything, which impressed me given thier history with me. They have pissed me off alot for other stuff with the cav.

I have a 06 SS SC and mine was making the same god awful racket, but I work for a chevy dealership in the body shop. The mechanic's tore into the top of my motor and low and behold the timing chain tensioner was bad. Hope this helps you out.
Hey guys I know this is an old thread, I am a certified tech at a Chevy dealership. I need to know what the fix for this is. I'm a college student with no money, so if I go ripping into my motor I need to know what will fix it. My noise comes and goes. Mostly can hear it at a stop but sometimes when going up or down hills. My concern is. I can stop the car when its making the noise and listen to it right new to my motor and then it just disappears. Without changing idle or anything. So if anyone would like to see the video or something let me know. I have a video of it and will post it whenever I know where to post it.
there is a TSB about the timing chain tensioner. Read it and compare it to the symptoms you're experiencing. No sense in internet dianosing, especially when we don't have a lot of information to go off of.
however, I will say that a bad exhaust leak can also appear as the same ticking noise you would get from the timing chain tensioner. So perhaps check there first. How many miles does your LSJ have?
55000, its an 06, I'm certain mine has an exhaust leak but I know that isn't it, I've caught it in the act and had my ear right next to where the chains are and heard it. I just don't want to find it to be the lower tensioner, nor do I wanna find out I spun a bearing.
