how not to 1/4 your balt
how not to 1/4 your balt
If any of you have ran your ATX cobalt, list times and what you did to make it down quicker..if you don't mind.
My first run ever...my first track ever
06 Cobalt LS 2.2, homemade short ram intake, cut off muffler (sounds good, not too loud)
Ok, So i am sitting for 5 hours waiting to get to the tree because of idiots losing oil, blowing motors and trying to finish the race. UGH!!
11:30ish pm ...
I'm in line against a 06 silver Cobalt SS sedan, Magnaflow cat back, aftermarket CAI, Chip'd, (he said over $1k of aftermarket parts/tuning)
He was hoping to run a low 15. His stock time was 15.9, w/out chip was 15.4.
We line up, around the lil burnout water pit for the big boys,
Both in L, spin the tires a bit on entering the lane. Mine spun good, a little smoke, his not so much.
We are staged, sitting there. waiting.
He jumps early (.3something reaction time.)
I've never ran before, i slam on the throttle as soon as i see him jump (.7somthin R/T)
He gets a good launch (left in I (which is 2nd..wtf does I stand for?))
I leave in L and spin like a ****, hit the rev limiter, kicks into limp mode and i'm a sitting duck, silent, immobilized, embarassed, hoping to god i didn't blow my motor or something..everyone laughs thinking i stalled it cuz i can't drive a manual...it's an auto dumbasses.
He's speeding down the track...1 1/2 seconds later my car comes to it senses and takes off spinning all of first, a little of second (i swear..noone ever believes me)
then i'm catching up towards the end of the track, we pass the traps he ran a 15.7, me a 17.7, we both stayed in it..the srt4 and evo had already turned off and i started coming up on him..then we had to hit the brakes.
I should've listened and left in I (Wtf?!)
but i left in L and it completely screwed me.
17.7?! ugh!! without the retard mode i think i would've ran a 16.2-16.4.
So thats and indepth look on how NOT to run the 1/4 in an ATX, leave in 2nd, trust me.

the 2.2 i drove for a month never came close to spinning in 2nd, especially not at a sticky track type surface. no offense but i wouldnt be calling the people at the track dumbasses because your car essentially did "stall" even though the motor never stopped turning. i highly doubt any of them have seen an auto act that way

I'm confused?
the cars from the previous race were on the return road. the cobalts did not shut down after crossing the line and probably ended up slamming on the brakes to avoid going into the emergency runoff. (bad racing etiquette)

In short, No. Because if left in I or D when racing, if traction control comes on..car cuts all power to the wheels which could limit your time.
As for in SS model Cobalts, its D(rive) I(ntense) L(ow)
D is a standard drive w/ overdrive.
I is intense mode which shifts a bit harder, alot higher rpm, and keeps your rpms up when you let off the gas (coasting).
L is Low which runs gears 1 and 2 and has no traction control at all.
As for him running a 15.9 stock is impressive. When I FIRST had the car, in SLC, UT literaly about 100 miles on the car, I ran a 17.6, with a little over 10k miles, no mods besides rims I ran a 16.3. When I did the ghetto muffler delete, I ran a 16.066 but my 2nd run was a 16.3
So if hes a 4dr auto SS (same as me)...he did damn good..or maybe the elevation is really different there than here in IL.
But if he told you he's chip'd...hes not since there is no "chip" you can do...unless its his way of saying hes tuned....or maybe hes got one of those ebay "chips".
And if he WAS running a 15.9 stock, then threw $1k in mods and only ran a 15.7...thats pretty damn sad.
i think he said that when in the cool down section of the track they stayed on the gas...and was catching up to the already coasting SRT4/EVO.
Personaly, When I pass the finish line...i throw the car in neutral and coast.

when i had my 05 auto LS my best time was a 16.3 with a custom intake. first launch was in L, spun the **** out of the tires. 2nd time I launched in D to get traction then at 20mph dropped into 2nd(I). At the Line i was on the gas and had it revved up to about 1800rpm.
havent got to run the 2.4ss yet. oh yeah i only got to go to the track just that one time.
that 16.3 run was .4reaction and the 60foot was 2.4

L-is low gears with no traction control on
I-is intermediate gears(higher shifting with traction control on)
i think it something like that

"limp" mode in an ATX (at least that's what i call it..) is when you spin the tires in excess and it basically causes the car to sit still, won't move, won't let the motor rev up, just kinda goes immobile for a second or so.
ATX - Automatic Transaxle
MTX - Manual Transaxle
I live in Orlando, FL (well Titusville) AT Sea Level.
I wasn't saying they are dumbasses because they didn't know an auto could do that, but I can usually just listen to a car and tell the difference between an auto and a manual, but i guess they didn't pay attention, I was mainly talking about the guy by the concession stand who was like "get an auto, or learn how to shift" and him and his friends started laughing. I replied with "It is an auto, not my fault my car has torque" He looked at me in disbelief then hopped back into his 17.6 second honda civic. lol
When I race on pavement..just regular street..i leave in L, it revs to redline, shifts itself into 2nd, push it up to "Intense" it then takes itself into 3rd at redline, then into D,
Seemed to work for me...until i got onto smooth surfaces haha.
It was embarrassing. Ah well. You learn from your mistakes.
Hey Ljavy17, you ever come up to the orlando area?

good story. Practice your launches.
If you are working with a stock auto tranny, I would practice launching from "L"
Reason for this is because it will stay in 1st gear longer than when in "I", and it will stay in 2nd gear until you shift out, which means you can get second gear up to around 5-5.5K RPMs and then move it to "I", so it can shift up to 3rd.
(Unless you've got an interceptor of some sort on your tranny to make the shifts harder, then leave it in "I".)
I wouldn't recommend getting to the redline at the top of 2nd, before shifting to "I". It takes the auto a brief moment to shift up, so you'd be wasting engine.
Go kick some Honda Ass.

i do usually leave in L, and then shift accordingly, but I guess on that track i just need to ease into the throttle when i launch, or don't do the hold brake press gas, release brake technique, cuz it spins like crazy.
