View Full Version : 2.4L Mods
RaineMan 09-06-2005, 10:59 PM So.... I got a whole 1 reply to my last question.... I'll try this in a more direct way.
From what I've seen so far.... no performance mods (intake, etc.) for the 2.4L exist.... in the images I've looked at the 2.4 is strikingly similar to the 2.2 in setup. My question to y'all is this... any bets on a intake for the 2.2 fitting the 2.4?
Just thought I'd gauge some responces here....

avro206 09-06-2005, 11:16 PM thats what I was wondering........buy one and find out for me!
ThEChEat 09-07-2005, 12:52 AM I've already bought one, just waiting its arrival. Me and my friend have gun to look for a good exhaust system, but won't put it on till the warranty is gone. I don't want to void that! The 2.4L is highly upgradable engine wise. I can see it being supercharged in the future. I also talked to one of the Eaton Supercharger guys and they said they have a supercharger that would fit the 2.4L. As for turbo, etc.. I don't know.
phxSS 09-07-2005, 03:07 AM ^^ The eaton blower will probably be the same exact one that's on the 2.0L
97cavie24ls 09-07-2005, 03:43 AM from what i could tell looking at it , the ss/sc and the ss 2.4 look to share the sme exhaust
but that is all from eye ball
ive been waiting to see stuff for the 2.4 also , ive been seriously considering 1

Yeah test it out for me too! LOL, I'll probably just make my own intake.

You can install an exhaust system on the car, it will only void the warranty on the piece you replace. Exhaust is almost never a consideration to fault if something happens to the car.
Brandon97Z 09-07-2005, 12:38 PM i don't see why the intake wouldn't fit. Same motor on the outside and same engine bay. I'd say go for it.
RaineMan 09-07-2005, 09:57 PM Glad to see that there are others thinking in the same way I am... if I could only find a place to buy an intake from now....

avro206 09-07-2005, 10:12 PM I would get a few little bolt ons too---just want to get a good base line run before I do anything. Then I will know exactly how the modification performed.
Brently 09-08-2005, 11:56 PM Soooo techically i could get a m62 blower and put it on my 2.4? But where to get all the parts from the 2.0 to set that up? hmmm
ThEChEat 09-09-2005, 12:39 AM Yeah, the m62 blower does fit. I've already talked to a salesperson about the supercharger and it does. It'd be pushing a close 230 to 250 HP I believe.
six7witha4spd 09-19-2005, 05:51 AM What else to be done when boosting? Bigger injectors, different pulleys? Some seem to make a big deal about the 2.0L NOT being variable valve timing, it doesn't matter when your shoving it in. Just crank the boost. Personally I will never do anything to my SS 2.4L because it's my commuter. Just mabye get rid of that nasty muffler with a old school, 15 dollar, high flow glass pack. A turbo or blower would definitely make the coolness affect better. I don't think a intake or exhaust will make such a big difference in performance on such a heavy, medium performance car especially for the $. The only way is boost. Then you have to run better gas. Then you break parts. My dad gave me a 26 model T coupe with a 327 cid thats force fed from a 6-71 roots blower, a car that wieghs much less than a new cobalt. Now thats a scarry ride.
aesthetics 09-19-2005, 03:11 PM a cobalt SS has 10.4 to 1 comp ratio, the level of boost will be very limited i'd say a max 6psi safely.. if the pistons are hypereutectic which i'd thing they are that will also limit the boost.

with a good amount more of trq?
RedCobaltSS06 09-19-2005, 03:22 PM I will be happy just to get my 2.4... but down the road, after warranties, i may consider some engine mods. Rights now i just want the wing and body kit off of an S/C. I know you guys will call it a clone or a copycat car, but i love the looks without paying the extra money for the s/c.

find someone with the same colored ss/sc that hates his large spoiler and trade with them
not sure how many have noticed , but the coupes and sedans have 2 different low spoilers
and i think the 05's are different also , unless there is a 3rd low spoiler
RedCobaltSS06 09-19-2005, 06:15 PM I am ordering the wing through GM, and the lower valances i have to see if they fit my bumpers first. i know the front will, don't know about the rear. the 2.4 comes with the side skirts though so all i need is the front and rear pieces.
97cavie24ls 09-19-2005, 06:59 PM ida got the dealer to do a trunk lid swap on the lot , lol
allthough there isnt alot of cars to choose from right now , lol
you gotta be paying a butt load for that spoiler through GM
RedCobaltSS06 09-19-2005, 07:07 PM i am getting it at my dad's employee price, so its high but not outrageous. it bolts right in to the stock wing location, so they are gonna install it when the car gets here. friday i hope. as for the rest, the valences and all i'll just have to see what fits and order. i hope i don't need new bumpers. the ss bumpers appear to look identical to the ss s/c ones.

maybe the front but not the rear.
RedCobaltSS06 09-22-2005, 01:10 AM yeah, i know the front will work but i know you're right about the rear. gonna need a new one... but i am just gonna get the front lip for now and get the bumper when i can afford it. piece by piece. she'll be mine for a while so i may as well stretch out the projects.
bosswoman 11-03-2005, 11:42 PM woot i don't feel bad about not buying the ss s/c then woot where can i get that eaton!!
Dragonsfire12345 11-04-2005, 12:57 AM When I got my SS 2.4 I had them swap the spoilers and it cost me 600. I say all 600 was worth it. FYI I kept up to a Eclipse w/Turbo we stayed neck to neck he didn't pull me and I didn't pull him until we got to about 115 then I started creeping up then we had to slow down due to traffic. Oh you should've seen his face he was pissed.
SCdyne 11-04-2005, 01:58 AM According to the GM people at SEMA they aren't doing anything with this motor. No blower no way no how. It's a 2.4L version of the 2.2L not of the 2.0L so the internals can't support the 150K-mile requirements GM needs to meet for a product.
BUT that doesn’t mean an aftermarket source can’t work out the details and offer a 50K mile solution.

Just an FYI for ya---the 2.4L is alot different then the 2.2L. The internals are better (forged rods) but your right not as strong as the 2.0 S/C. Plus a blown 2.4L with the 10.4 cr is not a great idea, for GM anyhow.
SCdyne 11-05-2005, 07:26 PM Yea, I know we have toasted one on a dyno already.
avro206 11-05-2005, 07:29 PM Yea, I know we have toasted one on a dyno already.
really..what kind of boost were you running? How much power did it make before it went boom?
Dragonsfire12345 11-06-2005, 01:58 AM if thats the case I think I'll keep mine all motor
Dragonsfire12345 11-06-2005, 01:59 AM if thats the case I think I'll build it up all motor nothing but add ons, and make it a show car

that heartbreaking news lol
celicacobalt 11-07-2005, 11:36 AM Yea, I know we have toasted one on a dyno already.
please go into detail, i only want to buy this car if it can be safley turboed... at least 6 psi until the internals are built
