View Full Version : Getting my SS into reverse

I'm just curious if anyone else occasionally can't put their SS into reverse.

Wanna know whether this a lock out problem on my shifter or a common cobalt annoyance.

It does eventually allow me to put it in reverse after a dozen or so tries.

you are at a complete stop when attempting to put it in reverse right?

Yes I am. I parallel park out front of where I work every night on level ground, so you can imagine how annoying temporarily losing reverse can be

Yeah, I already do that to stop it from grinding.

The problem is that I can't physically get the shifter into reverse.

Yeah, I already do that to stop it from grinding.

Just put the clutch in and give it a little rev. (I MEAN A LITTLE) and then let it out......it works every time. Almost like resetting everything. Don't ever push it if it doesn't want to. If it ever doesn't work I just fumble with the shifter a little with the clutch in and rev a little and everything works!!!!!! :cssNET:

you said it won't work......................put it in neutral.....rev a bit and then ease it in reverse. and try again. :cssNET:

Pull up with your pointer finger and middle finger on the ring lock under the shift knob.

How do you know those arent the fingers I'm already using? And what does it matter what fingers I use?

it doesn't matter, it happens to me sometimes, i just put it into neutral, let out the clutch, wait a sec, then firmly depress the clutch all the way and it works for me then. My car knows who's boss. She treats me right, she gets the good stuff, 91 octane. Oh yeah

I figure it's one of two things if you are having so much trouble putting it in reverse:

a. You're a retard and don't know how to drive standard.

b. There's something wrong with the car.

I assume you're not a retard and know how to drive standard, so maybe you better take it in to get it looked at.

No it dont matter rofl, and im refering to the ss model with the reverse ring lock under the shift nob. You never said you tried that so I assume you didnt know it was there. Now if it wont go in reverse and youve done that much then Im sorry I cant tell you there cuase I dont drive your car.

My car did this to me today trying to back out of the parking garage at work. Just put it into 1st gear and go back down to reverse and it went in gear. I think the problem is caused by parking it in 2nd gear doesn't trigger the lockout or something. I park on flat ground so i always forget to park it in the lowest gears. I looked in the manual and it says to park your car in reverse, maybe the lockout gets screwed up when you park it in another gear and shut it off...

Mine started doing this after i had the CM FX400 put in. (I'm having problems with this clutch so my situation might not be related.)

Completely stock 07 here. I get this problem every now and then, and all I do to fix it is:

Clutch pedal in.
Shift to 1.
Shift to 2.
Shift to R. (at this point R goes in as it should)

Shifting to 2 isnt neccessary but its just part of the little obsessive compulsive routine I've created for fixing the problem. :P

I had to get the entire reverse assembly in the transmission changed to stop my reverse grinding issue, fun times.

I have the issue too. It happens with first for me as well. no grnding but just won't go in. I just pop it into a different gear usually and it fixes it.

I have trouble now and then when it is cold. I put it in 4th then R and it goes smooth.

Same. I go to 2 first, then 1 goes in like butter. :)

I always put it into 1st before neutral. Happens on a ton of manual cars. No big, once you start doing it, u wont even notice it.
