2.4L vs. 2.0L Biggest question?
2.4L vs. 2.0L Biggest question?
Hey guys, new to this site, and soon to be a SS/SC owner...
My biggest concern is that if GM comes out with a better engine i.e. 2.4L Turbo or Supercharged later down the road?? 1-2 years. I would have thought they would have supercharged the 2.4L instead of a 2.0L, but here it is, and the numbers look good, but.....
I really dont want to be pissed off in a year if GM decides to "F" those who bought a 2.0L Supercharged when they plan on coming out with a Turbo/SuperC later.
Any word of this being the case?
Dont want to spend 24 grand to come up short, if you understand what i mean.
And, yes i understand i could just super/turbo a 2.4L myself, but to some people that DO NOT KNOW or want to admit, it takes alot of time/money to do this yourself.
A turbo / superC unit costs about 3-6 grand and that DOES NOT included INSTALL (Install about 1-3 grand). If you are a tech'y then thats great, and you can tune and primp all you want, but come on, most are not, and want a WARRENTY along with that so they can get it fixed, without paying alot of $$ to do so.. I have alot of friends that like to mod their vehicles, and they spend so much TIME and MONEY, we just end up making fun of them for being stupid. the smart ones get it done the first time, and have a reputable tech to maintain its constant performance and reliability.
Honestly i dont have days or weeks to leave my car somewhere where it will be pricked at until i have to bring it in again, for this and that...again time and $$$$... There is the common factor, money. I have it, but dont want to flander it around on just my vehicle... Gotta spread it evenly around.. Wife, Movies, Entertainment, and so on.....oh, yeah SCHOOL....... Almost forgot, DAMNIT!!! LOL... thank God for the GI.BILL......and TEXAS.
Now if you can answer those questions with serious reguard to the subject described above, this would haelp me out greatly.
Thanks, and hope to hear from all of you soon....

LOL... sorry... i am tired... I work nights and am online most of the time..
The question is 2.4L or 2.0L? Just wondering if anyone has heard that a 2.4L might be in the making, and would over power the now 2.0L Supercharged Cobalt. I know that the Solstice with the 2.4L VVTI Ecotec will have a Turbocharged version late 2006 - 2007... As well as is Kappa sister the Saturn Sky Redline edition...
I really dont want to spend 24K on a car and in 1-2 years find out that the Cobalt will be over powered by a 2.4L Turbo... Yes the Cobalt 2.0L will have the stages avail., but again what have you guys heard?
I am still hard pressed to own a SS/SC though... this is only a few questions i have to have answered before i make my final decision.
Again, thanks in advance..
Except in the dark time of the late 70's and early 80's every model revision has more power. I can pretty much guarantee that the Cobalt will stay the same for a year or two, GM is not going to make big changes that quickly, but after that there will be improvements. Just the way it is. Actually, the competition for the CSS is due for an upgrade in a year, so you might just be kicking yourself buying the Cobalt before then.

That is true most of the time, but there are those examples. Like the Z06, in 01 they were 385hp and then bumped it up in 02 to 405hp. I think there is always room for surprise with GM.
With the SS though, I tend to believe that they will leave it alone for a year or two. When the Saturn Sky/Pontiac are released with the 2.4 Turbo, then I would expect the SS to be released like that either that year, or the next.
So GM will eventually drop the blower and go turbo? not that it's a bad thing but why? I kinda like that it is SC , it makes it different. everyone has a turbo. Is that why? cause turbo's are more popular? And I really did not understand why they just did not make the ss SC 2.4l in the first place.
NO 2.4L turbo
The turbo will be a 2.0. All the stuff i've read and seen prove that it will be a 2.0L turbo. Extimate power at 240-260HP. There has been no word of this engine going in the CSS only the Kappa's. It makes sense though and could happen
only the 10.5 compression , and possible lack of better piston material , and the rods are all that hold the 2.4 back from boost
given the same quaility rods and pistons as the 2.0 , the 2.4 will put out more power
and considering GM gave the 2.0 a 6450 redline vs. the 2.4 redline that is closer to 7000
to me the 2.4 with a s/c makes more sense , it still has the oil cooler , and piston oil squirters
as i have said before the 2.0 is a good motor , but its better suited in the race cars that are spinning it over 10,000
all the above is why id rather have the 2.4 over the 2.0

I dont know where you got that info from, but the Z06 was always 405 HP from the LS2.
Cheers,

ABout the Z06
but now it is running an LT2 505hp, the LT1 was shy of about 20 HP, the LS2 was shy of the LT2 of about 30-40, and the LS1 only put up 355 or so to the table...

the 97-04 vette used the LS1 340 hp , the Z06 used the LS6 385hp and 405hp depending on year
the 05-up vette uses the LS2 400 hp , the Z06 is a LS7 500 hp or their about
as far as the LT's go , there was the LT1 , and LT4 , no LT2

You got it.
Also a bit to note, the 2.0 was designed to be the sportier negine, it may not have a higher redline, but with the lighter components it can rev faster, and also already has the FI system, the 2.4 runs to 7K without having to push the blower/turbo.

all in alll,(imo) the 2.4L engine(N/a, turbo, or super) is a more practicle engine in the cobalt.
if i had it my way the 2.4 engine would be the standard engine and the 2.4 performance turbo/super would be the option to make a cobalt ss. and maybe use the 2.2 for a value package or something for car rentals.
JMO though...
