Gas/Fuel/whatever you call it

OK guys,

bare with me, this might be either a noobie question or one that has already been asked (if that's the case then blame my small asian eyes for not seeing it )

But here's the deal, I know the manufacture suggests to run premium gas on it... so Octane 91, 94 (for Sunoco). But if it says "suggested" then that means you don't have to follow it. So has anyone ever pumped 87 or 89 into their 2.0? Does it really matter?

I've heard that running 87 or 89 will cause a 'knocking' in the engine, and that is highly not recommended if you planning on driving the car hard.

If you get on it with anything less than 91 you will get knock. Now the car retards timing and adjusts for knock but it has to knock first so it can adjust, so its really not a good idea to put anything under 91 in. Knock=unwanted stress on motor

Actually it will end up coming out even when you figure in that you get better MPG with the proper fuel; so there is no reason at all to run it. When I bought the car my sister went and filled it up with gas for me (She didn't know and I forgot to tell her to use 91+ so she put in 87). For the whole tank I got around 19 MPG. The second I finished the tank I went and filled it up with 93 and got 24 MPG.

I don't think they were trying to flame you man, there are just some very passionate SS/SC owners on here and they want you to get the best out of the car.

FYI - By using the proper Octane (91 - 94 - you won't get any better performance out of anything higher without a tune for that), you will usually get better milage.
