First off, im going to double post this thread. Once in this section and once in the general so everyone else can see it. Ive got approx 34,000 miles on my car and its an 06. here is the picture and then ill give the explanation.



now the reason im posting this isnt to brag or ask questions about it. Its obvious im losing oil. its not in mass amount and i know this cause i just changed the oil like 2 weeks ago and its still full. I know when i bought the car in sept there was some oil in the same spot and i figured id just clean it up when i have the engine detailed. and to be honest I dont remember if there was that much there or not, so now ive finally cleaned it off and im going to watch to see if it comes back. If it does ill take it to the dealer and request that it be fixed.

what concerns me is that last night we had a local cobalt meet and i was showing the other owners so they could check theres. no one else was leaking, BUT one of the newer guys to the group said that he already has taken his car to the dealer to have the same exact oil leak fixed.
So that is good sign that other owners engines could possibly be doing the same thing. so everyone should check the left side of there head next time theyre in there. btw the same owner who told me he had the same problem is also leaking some oil out the top of the head too.... .... sorry if this is kinda a repost, I just want to make sure everyone knows about it, beings it isnt only my car that has done it.

 

That is not your head gasket. That is simply your valve cover gasket. Easy to replace. Have you had your valve cover off at any time for some reason? If so, that is probably when it got damaged.

 

That's not a head gasket leak. Just a cam cover seal- easy fix
Someone (you?) may have overtightened the bolts on the cover

you guys beat me to it. pretty much all the balts around me have a slight leak there. cept mine though

 

Mine leaks in the same spot. it's not alot though so i'm not worried about it. I'm just gonna change the gasket when I swap the valve cover for a powdercoated one. and it's the valve cover gasket not the cam seal. Not to sound like an @$$

Here's a document that may help should you wish to attempt to replace the camshaft cover seal yourself, not to sound like an a$$ but that's just what GM calls it.

Geez I've been working for lexus for too long. I retract my previous statement on the basis that I was proven incorrect

 

I had the same issue. Noticed it about a month after I got the car. I went around the entire camcover and tightened all the bolts/screws slightly. The leaking stopped and 2 years later, it has stayed that way! Give it a try, it worked for me!

 

mines does the same thing...slight leak on the left side

 

No leak here. I'll be sure to keep an eye on it though.

 

Ive got a leak on that side , but it looks like its coming out of that plug towards the front of the motor . I think the plug is a access cover to one of the bolts for the timing chain guides . Anyone know for sure? thanks

 

Just took my car to the dealership...Come to find out the leak is known as a "CAM COVER GASKET SEAL" Guy from the dealer said hes never seen this before on a Cobalt...Who knows he said you should get it fixed right away before it starts to get bad...So since i have a warranty i left it there to get fixed...Just letting everyone else know about the information i found out about the leak

 

just took mine to the dealership today to get it fixed.....it was the valve cover gasket.....and mine only has 18k

 

Mine was leaking down inside #2 plug hole and a little on #4. Just enough to see some discoloration on the inside, a little oil sometimes on top of the plug. Never had the cover off on my car, but when I pulled it to check the gaskets were pinched, and they must have been like that since new. No big deal, gasket set is less than $20 new from dealer.

 

I have the same thing in the same spot. Mines an 06. That's fucked up!!!

 

mine is leaking horribly. i may go back to the dealer and ask if they will replace it for me. i know its not a big job but i have no mechanical talent at all. i would rather be safe then sorry

 

What is so great about this is that GM won't make a bulletin for this or any other leak in that matter, because GM gaskets and seals "NEVER" leak according to GM warranty and big wigs, i work at a dealership and that is the biggest bunch of bulls&^t i have ever heard since i see about 2 oil leaks or some other kind of leaks from seals on an average day.

 

same gasket they replaced before summer started is leaking again...back to the dealership we go to get it fixed again, maybe this time they will fix it right
