K&N Intake

Ok guys, couple quick questions:

I wanna get a K&N Intake since it is compatible with the SAI and won't trigger and CEL's that way. But I have heard something about the Oil in the filter which may trigger a CEL in and of itself... is this true?

Also, I look at the design and it appears very open to the engine bay which means it would probable suck up alot of hot air from the engine compartment... wouldn't this be counter productive?

Thanks guys

get a dryflow filter.
cobalt MAF sensors are very picky, and the slightest bit of oil from an oiled filter will throw codes.

that being said lots of people HAVENT got cels....but if you dont want to risk it at all....
stay away from oiled filters.

So if I was to trip a CEL I could just get it reset at like autozone or something and throw a dryflow on there?

hahaha, thanks bro. Nah, i just figured autozone for the CEL to save crap from the dealership. I've heard AEM dryflows are really good. Is there one that will fit on a K&N intake?

you could always pick yourself up a code reader for like 80-110 dollars depending on what you get. if you plan on modding your car it's a good thing to have handy, and this way if you DO get a cel you at least know what it is and what needs to be fixed.

It's not on a 2.2L, but I have a K&N intake and have had no CELs with the oiled filter. However, the filter comes pre-oiled from K&N, so you know it's not over-oiled. I believe that most of the problems a lot of people have with the oiled filters stems from the fact that when they clean them they over-oil them and that is what screws up the MAF sensor. Supposedly though if cleaned right you won't have any problems. Since I don't trust myself, I'm going to switch to a dry-flow filter like the AEM just to be safe. In my opinion though, you might as well use the K&N filter since it comes with the kit and that will give you some time to hunt down a dry-flow.

Are the dry flow filters a one time use, or can you clean them?

I know you can clean the AEM dryflows... and it looks a lot simpler than the recharge of a K&N

bucket, mix solution up, dunk it, swish it around like a washing machine for a while.
take it out and shake water out....let dry.

did it about 2 weeks ago. its easier than changing your oil.

Nope... SAI connects to the Intake as well. Check the install instructions for the K&N Typhoon. Step 16... thats for me. My only other thought was to get the GMPP and tap it for SAI

on the oil issue i've heard both sides of the arguement. GM has made a claim that oil will screw up the maf, but go on the k&n website and look at the FAQ, there are questions there specifically about it. there is even a sound clip if you don't want to read. they claim its totally bogus, all the bad maf's didn't go bad as a result of the oil, and many of the "bad" ones were prefectly good.

GM says the exact opposite, they claim that they have proved that an oil filter will ruin their maf sensors.

I think its an over oil issue causing the bulk of the problems. and the 2nd biggest cause is dealerships that would rather charge their customers for a new maf, rather than go through the warranty process because they can void the warranty when they see a k&n.

I say do what you want, keep the stock parts and if you ever have a problem put the stock parts back on when you take it in to the stealership.
