Air Filter

Hi,

Today im picking up my first car, a 2007 Cobalt LT Coupe
I was wondering if anyone could advise me on whether or not buying a better air Filter (KN, Fram etc) would be worth it.

Im not looking for any significant horsepower gains, although that would be nice,
I'm more concerned possibly getting better gas mileage and getting a deeper sound from the engine.
My buddy has a Cold air Intake and when he accelerates it makes a deeper sounding noise which i like.

So if anyone could let me know of their experiences with Air Filters it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You'll be the happiest with an exhaust upgrade and an intake. Do the exhaust first and then add the intake. GMPP performance or touring cat-back exhaust are #1. GMPP intake is a nice piece and adds a nice underhood appearance touch. Other owners prefer the InJen or AEM intakes. Here's a website that provides all the GM goodies:

Can he get the GMPP? I thought the 07 LT's came with SAI just like the late 06's started to.

If not, great, but if it does you need to get a K&N Intake and potentially look around for a Dryflow instead of oiled filter.

If you are wondering what SAI is, just do a search on it. In short, it is an emissions system that pumps fresh air into our systems to help dilute and burn up used gases.

Good luck man.

Thanks for you help guys,

Since I just purchased the car i probably wouldnt buy the exhaust until a little while longer ($$)...
Would it make sense to purchase an air filter in the mean time? (to achieve a little sound)

Have the dealer tell you if it has Secondary Air Injection (SAI). If you really want to achieve some sound, go with the Intake. If you don't have SAI I'd say get the GMPP (Dealer will not hassle you over this part) if you have SAI see if there are any options from the dealer (most likely not) and get a K&N.

Hey, all the power to him if he doesnt have it. Obviously CA has it. I have it from NY. Dust has it from NJ, and there are countless more. I was under the impression that all 2.2's made past mid '06 had SAI included.

As far as the sound i dont think the K&N Filter is going to give you any sound difference.. u will pick up a couple hp and maybe 1-2 mpgs so it wouldnt hurt to get it.

What if he did the airbox mod with a K&N? I've never done it, as I have an intake, but does the airbox mod give it some sound? And jo07, click here to read about SAI. And click here to read about the air box mod. Good luck!
