Thinking of getting an SS, worth getting a sunroof?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forums here, and I've been thinking about buying a Cobalt. I live in Oshawa, Ontario - where GM Canada has their office and main base of operations, so buying a GM product is kind of like supporting the "home team" here.

I test drove both the SS and the LT model of the Cobalt this last weekend, and I really prefered the drivetrain and suspension of the SS over the LT model. I'm sure that I would really enjoy the SS/SC, but unfortunately that is a bit out of my comfortable price range.

Do you guys find the sunroof worth getting? I mean, has anyone with a sunroof had many problems with leaking, or vibrational noise?

If I'm going to be paying an extra $18 a month for a sunroof, I just want to make sure that I'm not going to be buying an $18 / month pain in the neck

One other thing to consider, my two main color preferences are Sunburst Orange Metallic, and Black. I can only get the sunroof with a black car in this area - how much better do you guys find SOM?

Dont get black.. It does look amazing, but if your into keeping a clean car, its a HUGE pain in the ass. I had a black show car for 5 years, and it was the worst..... ALWAYS dirty. even dust shows up really bad.

I got silver this time around, and i'm in love. even filthy this thing still looks clean.

ANYWAYS back to your question. I'm a sunroof hater.. I never used it in my old car, but I wanted to have it for the cobalt. I love it now. it doesnt leak or vibrate so far. Maybe someone with an 05 can give you an oppinion after its a couple years old.

Get the SS for sure. S/C if you can squeeze in that extra payment cost Its a LOT of fun.

Just keep saving I suppose, there is a world of difference between the SS and the LT. Haved you looked at the non SC SS?

SOM is FTW. (For the Win!!) There is no better color. I have a sunroof on my LT and it came as an extra, I didn't request it but the only model they could find for me had one. It hasn't been a pain for me, just whistles a bit but that can and has been corrected. I don't see many with leak problems, but if it does you can always bring it back for warranty work.
I think the black's are sexy but the SOM just stands out and looks AMAZING in the sun, especially after a good cleaning.

I love my sunroof in both my balts. My wife uses them more than I do. So far, I've not had any troubles with either of the 2. The only noises I get is if I do over 130 or so and then my sunroof kinda whistles a little but not tooo bad.

It rattles like a ****. I had mine replaced under warranty and the new one is bad as well. I will not that I auto-x so I probably get a lot more body flex than normal driving, but damn. The last sunroof was to the point where the radio HAD to be on or you would hear it rattling ALL THE TIME. The new one isn't as bad, but it's still there. Can drown it out by closing the cover but I still know it's there.

I took mine off the lot so I had no choice. I'd still rather have not had the sunroof. May try one of those carbon fiber plugs if this sunroof gets as bad as the last one. Would eliminate the noise and cut down on the body flex a lil.

As for color - SOM all the way.

Oh god yes! After owning this car with a sunroof, I will never go back to a car without one.
Not a day goes by (unless it's raining) that my sunroof isn't open.

As for leaking. Asbsolutely not. I even leave the thing popped (not slid open) during rainy days and I've yet to get rain in the car.
Vibration... well that depends on when? As the glass slides open it vibrates a little... lol. But other then that, nothing.

You HAVE to get the sunroof. I love mine and it stays open all the time ... even during rain and nothing gets in it. Believe me, you will kick yourself in the ass if you don't get the sunroof option.

Definately get a sunroof. The only car I've had that didn't have one was an 89 cutlass(hand me down) ever since then. All my cars have had one, no leaks in any of them. Even my cavalier had a sunroof and didn't leak(now thats saying something.) Trust me for an extra 18$ a month the ss/sc is worth it. Wish I could have gotten that instead of trading up from my SOM non sc and just gotten it to begin with. Definately loved the orange color, dealer didn't have one when I got it though. Black is definately a pita to clean. Specially if you are **** about your cars.

dude, get the sunroof. I have one and never had a problem with it. Also, consider silver as a color choice it really is meant for the lazier folk like myself who choose not to sweat their ass off in 90 degree weather all the time so "thum rimz luk purty!"

I've got a sunroof... but I could honestly live without it... it does nothing for me but add extra weight.

Too bad you didn't pickup an SS/SC a couple of weeks ago like I did, 'cause there was $2,500 in rebates at that time.

My car has the sunroof, but that didn't really matter to me - one way or another.

It was the vehicle's color, the high rear wing, and the polished wheels that I wasn't budging on.

So yeah, the sunroof is nice (I've used it many times already) but it certainly wasn't a deal breaker for me. If you're just interested in keeping your payments as low as possible, then find one w/o the roof.

There's no shame in that ...

Well, the dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse...

I will soon be the proud owner of a black 2.4L Cobalt SS with a sunroof
Hopefully I get the car before the long weekend - pics soon to follow.

Mine rattles only when its cold out and i wish it opened a little further, but I love a sunroof. It was worth it on the option sheet. By the way, to all you SOM fans, two words for you: LASER BLUE.
