DoesNu FInish take out deep scratches as well? My trunk and door handle areas are looking horrible. They havnt scratched through the paint but messed up the clear coat. any way of getting it out with Nu Finish? I've seen the commercial with it shining up a weather beaten car.
The best wax in the world will look terrible over a poorly prepped surface.
For me, my favorite "wax" is Detailers Pride MaxWax. My favorite sealant is Duragloss #105. My favorite polish is ClearKote Red-Moose-Glaze.
You could put turtle wax over a finish that has been properly prepped and it would look fine, on the other hand you could put some $2000 wax over a finish with swirl marks and such and it would look terrible.

No, dont wash the car with degreaser. Degreaser is harsh and may harm the paint in some way.
When I say prep, I mean things like clay, polish, compound or such.
Start of with mothers clay and some mothers Power Polish and see how your car looks then, then try putting on a coat of wax. notice how much easier the wax is to apply and remove and how much better it looks now that it is over healthy paint.

Yes, over time Dawn will actually pull oils out of the clear on the car and make it subject to faster aging due to UV rays and industrial fallout. Besides, washing with dawn is useless anyway. Polishing or claying removes all old wax anyway so you dont have to wash with dawn.
Belive me, I detail cars for a living, and spend 2-3hours a day on detailing forums learning the newest safest way to detail cars. I feel I know just a little bit on the subject.
