Gauge Cluster Question

I have an 06 LS and it has the black 120mph speedometer in it and I was wondering if anyone knew weather or not i could just switch it out with a white 140mph cluster out of a car with the sports package? Like will the speedometer work right and will the odometer read what is actually on my car or will it still be at the mileage from the car it came out of?

if you swap the entire cluster, no, the mileage would not shop up. and thats a BIG no-no . you have to download info off the computer at the dealership. I did this to a colorado the other day. I believe that the ar will store the mileage tho and you have some elaborate way to make it show back up. but ill check for you when i go to work tommorow.

I was also looking into this and it's not worth the cost to do it b/c ur ecu is programmed for a 120 speedo... so u'd have to reprogram ur ecu and do a bunch of other things.... Overall it's just not worth it

Not entirely true, none of the mileage data is stored in the digital gauges themselves, you only have to make sure it has the same specs (lcd size, layout, connections, etc) for the lcd to display it's information. The mileage is stored somewhere else, I know this because I crashed an old motorcycle long ago and the new digital speedo showed the same mileage as the old digital speedo, even after D/C the battery, so it stored somewhere else for pretty much anything digitally controlled. Only the old ones now with the wheels that turn for mileage have that restriction where you have to keep the gauge cluster together. Short of shorting out that part of the pcm, ecm, bcm, i don't know any other way to alter a digital readout's mileage.

But I agree the trouble for recalibration isn't worth it to me at least.

I was just wondering cause I saw one for sale cheap online and I thought it would be cool. Also I was thinking that maybe if I had to get them to recalibrate the speedometer I might be able to have them get rid of the dumb 105 speed limiter.

when I swapped an srt-4 guage cluster into my old neon it kept the mileage from the srt-4 I pulled it out of. My neon was at around 30000 and when I put the srt cluster in the mileage read 14000.

Although I think the mileage in these cars is stored in the bcm. Or possibly the pcm. I'm not sure which.

Also when I swapped my stock 120 mph cluster out for the 160 the srt has, the speedo worked just fine. Lost no accuracy. I didn't reflash anything.

That "dumb 105 speed limiter" is there so that you can't kill yourself or someone else by driving faster than the tires have been designed for and you get a blowout.

If you get higher speed rated tires and if you have a good dealership in your area, they can raise you limiter to reflect your new high speed tires.

Its also there so that we can't bring a lawsuit against GM for making our cars go too fast.

as far as i know, if you swap the clusters, it will just work.

from what i have been told, the PCM sends out the speed to the cluster along with all the other info... so if you put any cluster into any cobalt, the speed/fuel/tach/mileage would be the same.

or, so i have been told.

Then as I said, go to your dealer and have them raise you limiter to reflect your new tires. I don't think you car will ever be able to go 168 MPH.

most dealers won't touch those kinds of things whether you have the tires for it or not. It's not just the tires. It's the suspension and aerodynamics of the car as well.

Not to say we can't go faster than 105, but most dealerships don't want to deal with any legal issues.

Um......

Any balt with the "Sport" package has upgraded tires and are regulated to like 125 MPH, or maybe it just can't go any faster than that. They have the same body, and suspension. The only difference is that they have H (130 MPH) speed rated tires instead of the other continental S (112 MPH) rated tires.

Only one way to find out if your dealership would be wiling to do it... Ask

there's no american 2.2 that can go faster than 105 stock because of the limiter. No matter what tires it has

You need to read a little more

Take notice of the 3rd post in this thread
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...light=governer

And you might want to also read this one.
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...light=governer

And this one
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...light=governer

And this one by Hackabuse, knows what he is talking about.

I could understand if it was just one or two people, but its dozens, get with the program.

Might be able to get there with a 125 shot of nitrus, if it doesn't blow, or run out.

Can Be Done!

Just an FYI for everyone on the 140MPH Gauges... My Girlfriend has a 07 2LT Cobalt and it had the 120 MPH Black speedometer and she hated it. I went on ebay and purchased the 140MPH White "Sport" gauges and replaced the entire cluster... A complete "swap"... Take out the Black cluster and put the "sport" cluster in and everything worked perfectly! Mileage stayed the same at 1776, and the computer knows when the "sport" gauge cluster is installed because the speedometer is dead on. (Tested it with a local police officer and a speed gun). A very nice $50 upgrade!! IT CAN BE DONE! All features and setting is DIC work too!

hmm, so I've got to find an Ion 3 gauge cluster that is not a 2.4.

Unless someone car confirm that a 2.4 cluster will work just fine...
