Should I be putting regular unleaded fuel in my '07 LT or better?
Should I be putting regular unleaded fuel in my '07 LT or better?
I want to keep my car in best condition possible, that means taking care of the engine. I have a 2007 Cobalt LT, should I be putting regular or premium fuel? Thanks guys
Regular. Anything else and you would be wasting your money.
Only cars with higher compression/forced induction need higher octane to prevent detonation.
If you are concerned with longevity, switch to a good synthetic oil for starters.

like the post above said, the octane rating is just a rating of its resistance to detonation, it has nothing to do with how clean it is or how filtered it is
accually unless its call for it could do more harm then good, im sure it wouldnt hurt the car, but unless you need it, you leaving more unburnt fuel in the system
It's true, higher octane is just a waste of money if your engine is tuned for regular unleaded. Though there might be a bit of truth to the Shell claim. There was that whole "top-tier" gas rating thing that GM and Shell participated in. Though it's not a result of the higher octane so much as an increase in cleaning agents in the fuel.

Higher Rated Octane Gasoline alone will NOT gain you power. The octane rating in relation to your engine is all referring the resistance to detonation (knock). Detonation is a uncontrolled explosion in your combustion chamber (not like a normal controlled igniting of fuel).
Higher Octane also has nothing to do with flame speed.
Now being that high octane fuel more resistant to detonation occuring, you can yield power gains by advancing ignition timing or even possibly running at a leaner air to fuel ratio (of course this depends on the application and the condition of the engine or setup you're running).
