My weekend = AMAZING! (+pics) 56k no way
Plain and simple, I have not had a better weekend in a long time.
Long story short, I went this weekend to the NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Racing Series event in Pomona, CA. Friday was a meet and greet with the drivers at Dave and Busters which was a blast.
Saturday rolls around and thanks to a radio DJ at the D&B thing, scored free tickets. Went over to Marty Ladwigs pit to watch him roll out the cars. Hung around the pit area for a while and he told me that we'd hook up the video system I brought after round 1 of qualifying.
So seeing the Pro FWD cars going down the track was very impressive. From there went back to the pits where I met up again with Marty and then began to install my video system. To my surprise, I was then given a team jersey and a wristband that allowed me onto the track. So from then on, every time we went out on the track, I was there in the midst of the action. To me the highlight was just getting to be around these beasts of cars, but better then that was being able to be apart and to help out on the team. Small things like cleaning the car, helping tow the vehicle, ect. was something of an honor to me to be apart of.
Sunday, same stuff, different camera angle installed. This time on the funny car roll cage. Marty had a bye run in round one due to running a 7.20 at 198, getting him the 1 qualifying position. He ripped down the track with a 7.17 at 197mph trying to set the record (7.15) and gain valuable points to possibly win the championship. Lunch time, I was invited to where the GM drivers/sponsors/owners were...where there was a great buffet style lunch. From then it was round 2 where Marty ran a 8.14 at 190mph against Jason Hunt who redlit the tree.
Off to the finals now. The tension was high the task was set that if Marty was to win the championship...he had to run a record AND win the race. Down on the line, Gardella's team was ready and so were we as the engine fired up. Then the lights went green and down the track the two cars went. It seemed like everyone held their breathe to see what would happen. Marty wins!!! But sadly did not run a record time, he ran a 7.33 at 199mph, therefore Gardella wins the championship. It was a bittersweet moment for the crew, however despite loosing the championship, they didn't walk away empty handed.
I'd like to thank everyone from Marty and Julie Stephan's teams and GM for everything that they did. I made several good friends this weekend.
