Trade in? $10k if you're lucky. High mileage + aftermarket rims will decrease the value.

Trade<$10000. Aftermarket equipment + high mileage + New Jersey = LOW TRADE IN VALUE!

And honestly, it doesn't really matter if the the car is waxed and clean or covered in mud. The dealership will be completely detailing it themselves before it ever hits the lot. It MAY "show pride of ownership" and MAY make them think you weren't too hard on it, but the aftermarket stuff will cancel that out in a hurry. They see aftermarket, they think hard driving. Period.

I live in Florida, have an 06 SS/SC, intake only, and I've been offered 14,500 by two dealerships. I was at 21,000 miles when I got those offers. I'm sitting at 43,000 right now, and have no real belief I could get more than $10000 if I tried to trade it in.

But I believe in saying go for it. You might be surprised. I only have personal experience with 5 vehicles owned in my life to go on. Someone might feel generous the day you bring it in. Worse thing they can do is offer less than you want. And then you walk out, and put it up for sale on here and other sites until you get close to what you want.

Oh, and there is a dealership around here that periodically offers 120% of KBB. Try to find if someone near you is doing something like that to squeeze a bit more out of em. just my .02.

Go 100% stock. You said you painted your stock wheels? That won't work either.

FULLY stock RIGHT NOW with the mileage you have, it's only worth $12k trade in. So even if you walked in right now today with what you have on the car, you probably would get $10k tops. What makes you think you're going to get $2k MORE 6 months from now. Won't happen, the value is only going to go down from here.

If you want $12k your only shot at getting it is to sell privately. You sure as hell aren't getting it on a trade.

1) It's not in excellent condition, good condition. VERY VERY VERY few cars are in excellent condition and they're driven by old ladies once a week to go to church and pick up cat food on the way home.
2) You don't have premium wheels

So say you do trade in for we'll say $9k to make a nice round number. You owe $14k at the time, so you have $5k left over that you want to roll into the cost of a brand new hot off the press SS/TC. So you're completely OK with the fact that you're paying $30k for a Cobalt? That's not even what it's going to cost you after interest and everything. I love my car but I'm sorry, NO Cobalt is worth $30k.

Did they look at the car to appraise it?
Also, what were you looking to trade for?

so you're going to pay over 30,000 for a cobalt? why does that seem like a good idea?

yes they looked at it, and at the point we hadnt' even discussed what was going to be traded for. I just went in and said that i'm lookin to trade and they said "ok lets get ur car appraised" SS/SC's are rare around here, and there are people in that dealership 3 or 4 times a week lookin for one according to the salesmen... i'd assume that's got something to do w/ the high offer

Probably has to do with it being rare then. PA/NJ/NY they're a dime a dozen. They're even on the private used car lots. Very very easy to find and new ones are readily available (less so now, but still readily available).

EDIT: Also sometimes they'll trick you with a high trade-in "appraisal" as well, if they didn't put the quote in writing a lot of times they won't honor it. That happened when I traded in for my cobalt, they appraised my Cavalier at what was an AMAZING price, then when we started working numbers they refused to honor it.

the guy at the dealer told me KBB overshoots sometimes by up to 5k... no dealership, insurance company, or bank uses KBB for an appraisal

I work at a chevy dealership and they will only give me 16k for trade in for my 07 SS/SC with 6,000 miles. We get pwnd.

KBB = Not even close to what a dealer will give you. KBB says my retail price for my car is like 2 grand more than what I paid for it brand new. If that were the case my car would be forsale for like 23/24k not 19k.
