View Full Version : Big Brakes Come to Cobalt
Todd TCE 12-07-2007, 09:52 AM As you have read elsewhere TCE is bringing over the HHR kit to the Cobalt as well.
In addition to the normal 1.10" wide 13" kit for the HHR we've also opted to produce a "narrow rotor" version for additional wheel clearance. This same design remains our number on selling BBK combo the past ten years so you know it's a tried and proven product.
Each kit comes complete with Wilwood forged four pot calipers, directional, slotted rotors, streetable compound pads and of course all the proper hardware needed for a complete installation.
More importantly this race proven package can be had at a significantly reduced Holiday price.

1. TCE 13" x .81 kit with FSL calipers
2. TCE spec front ss hoses
3. Red powder coated finish
4. Extra set of Poly D pads for Autrocross or Poly B pads for track day
5. 2 bottles of Wilwood 570 brake fluid
6. Bleeder bottle
7. Ground UPS to your door (cont. USA only)
Normal value: $1650+
Holiday price: $1169
You like RED? Ok, add $100
Guys; it's not going to get any better than this. This kit will be a bit narrower and lighter by way of the .81 rotor rather than the 1.10" rotor. For street enthusiasts it's the best of both worlds; lighter weight yet retaining the values of a BBK. Slap in the D pads and you'll be headed to the winners circle. And...for this price "to your door" you can wrap it up and put it under the tree for yourself on Christmas day!

roadrage06 12-07-2007, 10:11 AM is this for the SS/SC as well?
EmperorJJ1 12-07-2007, 11:17 AM damn pimpin...
alleycat58 12-07-2007, 11:21 AM Some questions:
1) Minimum wheel size with kit installed?
2) Why only front lines? Separate kits? If so does the rear kit come with lines as well? How much for the rear?
3) Any chance of a solid rotor option without the slots?
Todd TCE 12-07-2007, 11:39 AM Best answers I can offer up:
Applications- to the best of my knowledge this is a direct fit for all the delta platform vehicles. I'll openly confess that it was fully test fit to the HHR only and I'm relying in part upon feedback from others that this is a full, direct fit crossover application. If anyone was to encounter a problem with fit that would prevent this from working as listed I'll make any necessary changes or offer to take it back. I'm confident this is not the case but I back the product.
Min wheel size at this time is 17". There was a question of fitting 16s and it would require the kit be built to 12.2"d and that might be a plan I'd consider if we have enough interest. Not a bit deal to do this at all. Same price, same caliper etc. only a smaller rotor of the same design.
Only front hoses at this time as that's all the kit requires. I've also yet to work out the required rear hoses and fittings. There is no rear kit at this time so hoses are not a priority there. It's my understanding there are few if any rear disc cars on the market now. 2008 SS perhaps? I'm not offering a drum conversion at this time either. You won't like the price if I did. When we have enough demand for a rear kit the first step will be the common 11.75 rotor and stock caliper relocation bracket as found on many other kits to retain a stock parking brake.
Plain rotors can be had. Just give me a week to weld up the slots....lol. Seriously, I just need a pre order to have them in stock without the slots, no problem.

Yikes. Every single SS produced since 2005 has 4 wheel disc. The only front disc/rear drum Cobalts are base level (base, LS, LT, LTZ) from 2005-2006. I believe in 2007 rear disc became an option on the LT trim level as well.
So any 2.0 SS/SC or 2.4 SS/Sport owner would need a 4-wheel kit.
Todd TCE 12-07-2007, 12:31 PM Fair enough. Again; the original product was based on the HHR per a local customer. Point noted and I'll see what I can come up with for oem rear hoses if that's a sticking point for anyone.
At this time what's available is the front kit. If someone wishes to work on a rear kit I'm open to ideas. Whether the vehicle "needs" a four wheel kit is questionable. I'm not opposed to doing a rear kit as I said before, I do many and in different flavors from stock caliper/larger rotor to 15" kits with four and six pots, custom axle flanges, radial mount and custom C-clip designs. Please understand that it's not that we cannot produce nearly anything you want....it often comes down to "who's going to buy it?"
TCE has been producing front kits since 1993. Before many of the big name guys were even around. And I've done rear kits begining with the Impala SS back in about 97. The biggest hurdle for rear kit is simply price point. There's often the notion that because a rear system is doing perhaps 20% of the woerk it sould be 20% the cost. Sadly in many cases they are the same and even more costly. I've also learned in 14yrs not to put much weight in the arguement "if you produced a rear kit, I'd buy your front kit". Reply: Buy the front kit now, put up a $500 deposit on the rear, we'll finalize the options and design and give you first dibs on the kit at a reduced price. It's really that simple.
If anyone has custom plans or options they'd like to discuss we can certainly review them. Colors, caliper options (within design limits) and even custom logos. Browse around:

alleycat58 12-07-2007, 12:38 PM Hrm, I don't know. I really like that you guys are using Wilwood stuff, but for a racing application, I'm hesitant to mod the front brakes and not the rear, as that's the single most important component. I'll keep and eye on it and see what turns up. I don't have the money for a full kit now, but as funds progress I'm definitely open to it. Will have to see what direction I go with the car this year. Right now I'm leaning toward building more on the suspension, THEN doing the brakes.
Definitely don't give up on the Cobalts, I'm sure there are some 2.2s out there that are definitely watching this as it's a great deal, it's really hard to beat Wilwood stuff.
Todd TCE 12-07-2007, 02:38 PM Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm more than willing to produce other product by order. But I'm careful not to over do it with too many products in untested waters. All this is time proven on many other vehicles so producing such kits is not hard.
As for suspension first, the only thing I can offer up are comments from former customers:

My personal favorite: "if I'd known then what I do now, brakes would have been one of the first things I purchased. Everytime I step on the pedal I know where my money went. Can't say that for every product I've bought"

Oh I know. I've done a bit of upgrading to the stock stuff already, we'll just see where I go from here.
Todd TCE 12-10-2007, 09:53 AM Time is running tight if you want to make this sale in time for Christmas. Shipping can become a problem and that free ground UPS won't get it there if you don't move soon!
EmperorJJ1 12-15-2007, 11:01 AM whats stock rotor size?
Todd TCE 12-16-2007, 12:59 PM I don't offer stock replacements, sorry.
The notes on the HHR stock are in the shop at this time so I can't tell you what size you may be looking for anyhow.
